Introducing LLCC’s Data Governance Council

Pyramid chart of data governance operating model for Lincoln Land Community College. The bottom level is operational: data stewards, business level specific. The level above that is tactical: data subject matter experts (SMEs), cross business unit. Along the operational and tactical levels are data governance work teams. At the top of the pyramid is the strategic level: data governance council, strategic enterprise. Above that is the executive level, president's cabinet. Along all four levels are communications and escalation/approval path.Data are institutional assets that need to be effectively managed. In fact, data are a special type of asset, the only asset that is non-depletable, non-degrading, durable and strategic. As such, data deserves attention that is on par with other institutional assets. Yet data processes and oversight are informal and mostly absent at LLCC. With this as the impetus and context, a FY20 planning initiative was to design a data governance operational model for the college (see image for visual of LLCC model).

A series of short articles will introduce the college community to LLCC’s data governance structure. Today, we just want to introduce the Data Governance Council (DGC) membership.

Spring 2021 CCSSE results are available

Reports from the Spring 2021 Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) are available on the IRE SharePoint site. The CCSSE is a product and service of the Center for Community College Student Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin. Student engagement, or the amount of time and energy students invest in meaningful educational practices, is the underlying foundation for the Center’s work. The CCSSE survey instrument is designed to capture student engagement as a measure of institutional quality. The IRE staff can provide analysis of our student responses to specific survey items or lead a general discussion of the findings. Just contact us at AskIRE@llcc.edu to initiate a conversation on how we can help.

Economic impact studies available

The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) collaborated with the Northern Illinois University (NIU) Center for Governmental Studies (CGS) to complete an in-depth study of how Illinois community colleges meet the needs of local business and industry. The reports include (a) a student-level analysis highlighting the return on investment from community college certificates and degrees and (b) the economic impact of community colleges as engines and employment hubs in their host communities.

Reports are written at both the system and local level. For your convenience, we are providing both on the IRE SharePoint site.

RISC findings available for review

Results from the fall 2020 Revealing Institutional Strengths and Challenges (RISC) survey administration are available on the IRE SharePoint site. We participated in this national survey to identify campus offices that excel in helping students succeed and pinpoint where our students experience obstacles. Please take some time to review the documents. You will learn what our students identified as institutional strengths and challenges.

Environmental scan available on IRE SharePoint site

LLCC Institutional Research and Effectiveness recently added an environmental scan to their SharePoint site. Completed in April 2021, the LLCC Environmental Scan examines trends which could affect the people who live and work in District 526, the businesses that operate in the communities we serve and the landscape of higher education. This document tells us about the environment in which we operate and should be used to inform strategic (e.g., SWOT analysis, goal setting, benchmarking) and operational (e.g., enrollment management, academic program development, community partnerships) planning. Questions can be addressed to the team at AskIRE@llcc.edu.

Access and explore the site via our IRE tile on the LLCC SharePoint/Portal, and we welcome feedback or suggestions at AskIRE@llcc.edu.

Please check back periodically as we continue to develop our self-service approach to supporting decision-making.
