Welcome Lynn Gerton and Barb Messner

Lynn Gerton began July 18 as an academic services assistant for LLCC. She previously taught at Springfield Christian School for six years and worked for Shunk Financial Group. Lynn earned a bachelor’s degree from Central Christian College of the Bible and a master’s degree in education from Greenville University. She can be reached at lynn.gerton@llcc.edu or 217-786-2582.

Barb Messner joined the college July 11 as administrative assistant to the dean, Workforce Institute at LLCC. She previously worked 25 years at Lincoln Christian University in the areas of teacher education, library and student advising. Barb earned bachelor’s degrees from Lincoln Christian University and Illinois State University and a master’s degree from Lincoln Christian University. Still time to register for Workforce/Health Care 101

If you know of a prospective student interested in a hands-on workforce or health care career, encourage them to attend LLCC’s Workforce and Health Care 101 from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, July 26. Registration is available at www.llcc.edu/101.

Hands-on sessions will be offered in:

  • Automotive technology
  • HVAC
  • Construction
  • Commercial electrical maintenance
  • Nursing (RN, LPN, CNA)
  • Surgical technology
  • Neurodiagnostic technology
  • Occupational therapy assistant

The event begins at the Workforce Careers Center. From 5-5:45 p.m., participants can learn about the LLCC application and enrollment process, ways to pay for college and next steps. From 5:45-8 p.m., they will attend their chosen workforce or health care session.

LLCC to host Workforce and Health Care 101 July 26

101. Health care. Workforce. Images of students getting hands-on training.LLCC will host Workforce and Health Care 101 from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, July 26 to allow individuals to try out various career training programs. Registration for the free event is available at www.llcc.edu/101.

Hands-on workforce sessions will be offered in automotive technology, HVAC, construction and commercial electrical maintenance. Health care sessions are nursing (RN, LPN, CNA), surgical technology, neurodiagnostic technology and occupational therapy assistant.

The event begins at the Workforce Careers Center. From 5-5:45 p.m., participants can learn about the LLCC application and enrollment process, ways to pay for college and next steps. From 5:45-8 p.m., participants will attend their chosen workforce or health care session.

“We invite prospective students to learn about these in-demand industries and career opportunities, and how our programs can get you into a high paying career quickly,” said Nancy Sweet, dean of the LLCC Workforce Institute. “This event is unique in that participants can actually roll up their sleeves and do hands-on activities in our labs.”

“Health care jobs are plentiful, and our graduates are highly sought by local employers, who will be on hand at this event,” said Dr. Cynthia Maskey, dean of health professions. “We invite anyone who is considering a health care career to explore our nursing and other allied health programs.”

Two LLCC students in the fall 2021 electrical distribution lineman program were featured in this award-winning photo taken by Colten Bradford, assistant editor of Illinois Country Living, a publication of the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives. The photo recently won a national Gold Spotlight on Excellence Award from the Council of Rural Electric Communicators in the Best Photo category.

Dee Krueger, director, LLCC-Taylorville, was interviewed yesterday on the WTIM Morning Show. She discussed full semester and module classes, summer and fall classes at LLCC-Taylorville and the upcoming grilling series demonstration at Ace Hardware in Taylorville on July 9.

The July issue of “Keep on Truckin’,” the magazine of the Mid-West Truckers Association, features a story about the donations of trucks and chassis to LLCC’s new diesel technologies program. The donations came from CIT Trucks and Rush Truck Centers. Jeff Gardner, director, diesel technologies program, is quoted in the article.

Rush Truck Centers in Illinois has donated a GMC 5500 medium duty truck to Lincoln Land Community College’s new diesel technologies program.

“We are grateful to Rush Truck Centers for the donation of this truck, which will provide hands-on learning experiences for multiple classes within the diesel technologies curriculum,” said Jeff Gardner, LLCC diesel technologies program director.

Greg La Brune, Rush Truck Centers regional general manager, commented, “The need for qualified technicians in this industry is never-ending, and a diesel program coming to our hometown is great news. We at Rush Truck Centers look forward to helping develop this new program in any way we can.”

LLCC’s diesel technologies program is set to launch in fall of 2023, offering a two-year associate in applied science degree. The program will prepare students for high-demand, high-wage careers as service technicians in agriculture, construction and highway truck and transportation industries.
