Introducing the 2024 LLCC Homecoming Royals, Dane Foster and Olivia Marchizza.
Dane is a business major from Sedalia, Missouri who plays basketball for the Loggers. Olivia is from Auburn and is working on her associate degree in science. She plays basketball for the Loggers, is an officer in Phi Theta Kappa and a member of the Honors program.
Coach Ron Riggle, LLCC’s head baseball coach and athletic director, reached his 700th win on Feb. 17 versus University of Arkansas Rich Mountain with a 7-5 victory.
Coach Riggle is in his 34th season coaching at LLCC and his 22nd year as head coach. He has served as athletic director at the college since 1997. Riggle also played at LLCC during the 1987 and 1988 seasons.
Riggle has been to the NJCAA National Tournament eight times (in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 2000 as an assistant coach and in 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2021 as head coach) and has won the national tournament twice (1994 and 2000).
He has been a part of five no-hitters and sent on over 200 players that continued to play baseball after their time at LLCC. During his time as head coach, there have been nine LLCC players who have advanced to play professional baseball.
“It is an honor to have been able to play for Coach Riggle and then join his staff,” said Coach Danny McGee, LLCC assistant baseball coach. “He has been a tireless worker and has always strived to represent LLCC with the utmost class and dignity. While there have been numerous individual awards and several victories, he always cared about the players off the field as much as on the field. He cares as much about their classroom accomplishments as their athletic accomplishments. His approach has resulted in him leading a championship caliber program for decades.”
All of next week (Jan. 8-12) the fitness center and locker rooms will be closing at 4 p.m. LLCC will be hosting the county high school basketball tournament. Teams will start to arrive at 4 p.m. and will need to utilize those areas.
Chad Jones, professor of exercise and sports science and head women’s basketball coach, authored the Dec. 24 essay in the State Journal-Register, “The importance of sport and fitness.”
Ty Bergman, adjunct instructor culinary and special events consultant, wrote this week’s Epicuriosity 101 column in the State Journal-Register, “A coffee tradition.” Over winter recess, Jay Kitterman, culinary and special events consultant, turned his Dec. 27 Epicuriosity 101 column over to Charlyn Fargo Ware, who wrote “Favorite cookbooks.” Joshua Dineen, chef specialist, wrote the Dec. 20 Epicuriosity 101 column, “Favorite French side dishes for the holidays.”
LLCC has named Kellee Phillips as its new head women’s volleyball coach. She replaces Hannah Werth, who will be stepping away from coaching.
Originally from Coal City, Phillips had an extensive playing career in club volleyball for UNO and the historic powerhouse Sports Performance. She also played four years as a UIS Prairie Star in Springfield.
Phillips has coaching experience from the club realm as well as high school. She previously coached and ran the Sacred Heart-Griffin volleyball program for two seasons (2022-2023).
“We’re very excited to have Kellee as the new head coach for the program,” says Ron Riggle, athletic director at LLCC. “She embodies what our volleyball program represents, and we are excited to see what she does this coming season.”
“I am thrilled to be a Logger and grateful for this amazing opportunity,” adds Phillips. “I’m excited to help my players reach their full potential on and off the court, as well as all of our student athletes at Lincoln Land!”
