Banned Books Week & Lit Fest 2024

LLCC English and Humanities has planned two weeks worth of activities to recognize Banned Books Week, Sept. 22-28 and October’s National Book Month. This week’s activities include:

Wednesday, Sept. 25

  • Noon-2 p.m. – “Well, I’ll be Banned”: A Celebration of Banned Books in A. Lincoln Commons.
  • Kickoff of the InstaHaiku contest, open to LLCC students. The contest, sponsored by the LLCC Writing Center, will close Oct. 3.
  • 2-3:30 p.m. – Quiet Reading Party – A bring your own book (BYOB) event with tea and cookies, in the Writing Center.

Thursday, Sept. 26

  • 1-3 p.m. – Teachers as Writers Panel in the LLCC Library

Friday, Sept. 27

  • Noon-2 p.m. – Student Open Mic in A. Lincoln Commons.
  • 3-5:45 p.m. – Film screening of “Hugo” in Menard Hall, Room 2207
  • 6-8 p.m. – “All Booked Up”: An Evening of Literacy Reading with Local Authors in A. Lincoln Commons.

Training and Development Opportunity on Oct. 15

LLCC Human Resources is offering a session titled “Finding Joy in Your Work” with David Ziebler on Tuesday, October 15 at 10 a.m. Attendees will explore the keys to rediscovering joy and fulfillment in their professional lives. Whether you’re feeling burnt out, disengaged, or simply looking for ways to enhance your work experience, this training will provide actionable strategies to reconnect with the passion and purpose behind your daily tasks. Monday Morning Mentor: How Can I Use AI to Create Engaging Discussion Boards?

This week’s Monday Morning Mentor is about using AI to create engaging discussion boards. The presentation is available Sept. 23 and on-demand for one week. These materials will not be available to be viewed until Monday when the presentation becomes available. Join the Walktober Challenge

A person's feet walking in the fall leaves.Get ready to move this October by joining Walktober, the month long walking challenge, running from Oct. 1 to October 31.  Teams will consist of a captain and up to five additional participants, making it a fun and supportive way to stay active with your colleagues. Whether you’re a regular walker or just looking for a reason to get outside more, Walktober is a great way to boost your wellness while enjoying some friendly competition. Laura Anderson, LLCC professor of art, will have her art featured in “Continuum” at UIS Visual Arts Gallery, Sept. 26-Oct. 17. A reception will be held at the gallery Sept. 26, 5:30-8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. “Continuum” will feature a series of recent works that examine the structural frameworks of the microverse, exploring the interplay between natural and man-made structures. Anderson’s focus on cellular forms, fungi and mycelium serves as both subject and metaphor, revealing the interconnectedness of all living systems.

KUDOS nominations being accepted through Friday

Lincoln Land Community College KUDOS: Key or Unique Demonstrations of Outstanding ServiceKey or Unique Demonstrations of Outstanding Service award nominations are open! They will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 27. Faculty and staff can nominate a deserving colleague by submitting the KUDOS form (also available by clicking on the KUDOS tab in the upper-right corner of LincIn). Please use a Chrome or Firefox browser when completing this form. The KUDOS awards will be announced Friday, October 11.

The KUDOS awards are an informal way to recognize the special contributions — small and large — made by faculty and staff that create the positive environment that is LLCC.

Non-Traditional Course Delivery Follow Up

The Non-Traditional Course Delivery Workgroup held their kick-off meeting on Sept. 16. The team is focusing efforts in three different areas including Competency Based Education (CBE), Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) and Blending Non-Credit/Credit programming. The co-chairs have developed a one-pager for each and invite anyone who could not attend the kickoff to review them and contact a co-chair by Friday, Sept. 27 if interested in working with a group of colleagues to advance the college in any of the three areas.
