Barb Bernardi, professor of biology and 2013 Pearson Master Teacher, penned this LLCC essay for the State Journal-Register Oct. 6. The article has gone viral in the alpaca world, with the largest alpaca resource for alpaca farms, Open Herd, featuring the article under “alpaca news,” along with the IAOBA (Illinois Alpaca Owners and Breeder’s Association) and a Great Pyrenees website.
Cultural Program Next Week!
The Student Life Office welcomes filmmaker Eliaichi “Ellie” Kimaro to campus on Monday, Oct. 14 for a presentation in the R.H. Stephens Room at 1 p.m. The Seattle-based filmmaker is a first-generation American with a Tanzanian father and Korean mother. When Ellie was older and in an interracial relationship of her own, she wanted to better understand this world her father had left behind at 18. When her father moved back to Tanzania for good, Ellie followed him to make a film about this culture. What Ellie discovered in Tanzania, in her family and in herself is the subject of her personal award-winning documentary, “A Lot Like You.”
As both a cultural insider and outsider, Ellie asked questions that most people who grew up on Mt. Kilimanjaro would never think to ask. Much to Ellie’s surprise, the stoic women in her family opened up, telling stories about trauma and survival. Ellie reconciled this culture she’s inherited with how she defines herself today as a woman, an activist and mother. “A Lot Like You” was named Best Documentary at the 30th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. A portion of the net proceeds from the film will help fund the construction of a girls’ dormitory at the Vunjo Secondary School in the Kimaro family village of Mwika.
PTK & SGA fundraisers to benefit fight against breast cancer
Phi Theta Kappa will be holding a “Pink and Jeans Day” on October 24th to benefit Susan G. Komen Foundation. Stop by the Student Life Office with $5 to purchase your pin to wear on that day along with your pink and jeans.
The Student Government Association is also raising money to fight breast cancer. Look for their table on Fridays in October from 11am-1pm in the Student Union and make a $5+ donation to receive a pink t-shirt!

Several users have reported getting an email, appearing to be sent from the LLCC helpdesk, asking the user to click on a link to confirm their account for upgrade. This email is NOT from our ITS department and is a phishing attempt to acquire users logon credentials. Please disregard this message and delete the email. If you have already given your information, you should login to web advisor and change your password.
Phishing is a common identity theft method used by fraudulent parties. NEVER send your personal information including passwords, user IDs, credit card numbers or a Social Security Number via email. Passwords should NEVER be shared with ANYONE in any form.

Bob Howard, director, Truck Driver Training, appeared Oct. 8 on the WLDS morning program and was interviewed for this SJ-R story regarding the free training program being offered for long-term unemployed individuals (see story below.) He will also appear on WTAX at 8:40 a.m. Oct. 9. Julie Rourke, director, workforce development, provided additional information for the SJ-R story.
Our condolences to Teri McDonough
We extend our sympathy to Teri McDonough, coordinator of distance education services, whose sister, Carollyn Blackwell, passed away Friday, Oct. 4. Visitation and funeral services were held at Johnston Funeral Home in Ina, with burial in Mt. Vernon, Ill.
Prof. Christie Hovey co-authors second textbook on Microsoft® Word
Christie Jahn Hovey, professor of business and technologies, has co-authored the new textbook, “Skills for Success with Microsoft® Word 2013 Comprehensive,” with Kris Townsend, for Pearson Education, Inc., publishing as Prentice Hall. Additionally, she authored content for Word 2013 that will be included in Pearson’s online learning platform for technology, MyITLab.
The book is available for sale at the LLCC Bookstore or online at http://bookstore.llcc.edu/Home.aspx, as well as at college and university bookstores throughout the world, and numerous online book sellers.
Campus directories and Forwards available
New campus phone directories are now available at the Information Desk in A. Lincoln Commons or at the Public Relations & Marketing (PRM) Office in Menard Hall.
Also, Spring ’14 FORWARDS may be picked up in the lower level hallway of Menard Hall near the mailboxes, with smaller quantities available at the Information Desk and in PRM. Please call Rose at 6.2218 if you need to make other arrangements for delivery. A digital version is also available online and students can search WebAdvisor for classes beginning 8 a.m. today, Oct. 8. Copies will be arriving in all district mailboxes over the next week!
