Writing Center holding story contest this week

Lincoln Lecture Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. in Trutter Center
The 7th annual Lincoln Lecture in commemoration of Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12 will feature Ron J. Keller, associate professor of history and political science at Lincoln College and director of the Lincoln Heritage Museum. Keller will speak on “Who Does This Guy Think He Is?? 150 Years of Living, Loving and Loathing Lincoln’s Legacy.” The presentation begins at 9 a.m. in the Trutter Center.
Keller says his presentation will address the Lincoln legacy. ”From the moment of his tragic assassination 150 years ago, Abraham Lincoln was catapulted immediately into the annals of American greatness. Ever since then, America has emulated him, adored him, written about him and argued about him. While most consider him our greatest president, there have been some groups and individuals who have resisted and even scorned his legacy. Lincoln has, and remains, a more controversial and polarizing historical figure than many realize.”
Drawing upon quotes, images and other iconography in this presentation, Keller examines the disparate public and private perceptions of Lincoln. This presentation will challenge the audience to ponder what Lincoln’s legacy means to us today, and what these perceptions say about America’s past and present.
Former athletic director Dick Dhabalt to be recognized at homecoming game
In acknowledgement of his dedication to education, athletics and students at LLCC, former LLCC athletic director, men’s basketball coach and founding faculty member Dick Dhabalt will receive special recognition with the Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year Award. The award will recognize annually both one LLCC male and female athlete.
Mr. Dhabalt will be recognized with the award during half-time of the women’s basketball game, which will begin at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 14 when the Lady Loggers take on the Lincoln College Lynx in Cass Gymnasium. The men’s game will follow at 4 p.m. Admission for the games is $5 for adults, $3 for students K-12 and is free for LLCC students, faculty and staff with an LLCC ID.
During his tenure at LLCC, Mr. Dhabalt served 20 years as athletic director, 20 years as head men’s basketball coach and 25 years as a faculty member teaching physical education and math. He was selected by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) to serve as the Region IV assistant director and then director of Region XXIV. He was inducted into the NJCAA Region XXIV Hall of Fame in 1991, and is an athlete Hall of Fame member at LLCC, as well as his alma mater, Bradley University.
Student United Way activities
The Student United Way of LLCC is sponsoring a book drive for the SCOPE after-school program. They are seeking books (new or gently used) for K-5 student . Donations may be brought to the Student Life Office before Feb. 20.
