LLCC Library to host “Food for Fines” campaign to benefit Central Illinois Food Bank

The LLCC Library will kick off a “Food for Fines” campaign during National Library Week, April 12-18 and continuing throughout the spring semester. LLCC will donate all collections to the Central Illinois Food Bank. Hy-Vee groceries will match up to $500 worth of items collected.

Food for Fines allows students, faculty and staff to pay off fines or fees on their library account by donating non-perishable items for the Central Illinois Food Bank. For each item donated, individuals will receive $5 off of their total fines.

Suggested items include canned meat, fruit, vegetables and pasta sauce; chili, beef stew and other soups; cereal, pasta, rice and macaroni and cheese; boxed meals and peanut butter; along with non-grocery items such as soap, toilet paper and diapers. Donations to the LEAGUE campaign benefit our students and programs. Contributions to Penny Wars will be used for the Foundation’s Pay It Forward fund for student emergency needs.

Springfield Mayoral Candidate Forum being held at LLCC March 27

LLCC faculty, staff and students, and the general public are invited to a Springfield Mayoral Candidate Forum being hosted by Local First Springfield this Friday, March 27 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Trutter Center.

Mark McDonald of WSEC (PBS) will be moderating this LIVE event being aired on WQNA radio and on COMCAST (Channel 18) in Springfield. Mr. McDonald will be asking questions that have been submitted to LFS. The public will be allowed to ask questions also.

This event is a production of the Capital Area Career Center.

Community garden spaces available

Faculty, staff, and students can now register for a raised bed in the LLCC Community Garden. As a garden participant, you will manage Community gardenyour own space to grow the fruits or vegetables of your choice all season long. A $20 garden fee allows you to choose up to three raised beds, depending on space available and the amount of space you are willing to manage. Raised beds are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis until filled. First-time gardeners are welcome!
There are many documented benefits of gardening – it is cheaper to grow your own food, you can reduce stress through gardening activities and connecting with the soil, and you can eat a healthier, more delicious diet by incorporating whole foods that you grow yourself.

The LLCC Community Garden is located behind the Workforce Careers Center and Montgomery Hall. Contact Marnie Record at 6-4993 for more information about the LLCC Community Garden and to inquire about garden space availability.

Sabbatical leave report placed in archives

The  sabbatical leave report for the fall 2014 sabbatical leave of  Jason Dockter, professor of English, was recently placed on file in the college’s archives in the Library. Sabbatical leave reports and sabbatical leave proposals dating back to the first sabbatical leaves in 1974-75 are on file in the archives.

Nominations for 2015 Distinguished Service Award being accepted

Who will be the 2015 Distinguished Service Award honoree? This award is given to LLCC employees who demonstrate exemplary leadership, promotes a learner-centered environment and promotes service to the college community. Service is a matter of the job. This award recognizes those who provide service beyond the minimum. Leadership can be provided in a subtle way. Nominations should clearly describe what qualities exhibited by the nominee through his/her performance, attitude, behavior and action puts them in the elite class of “Distinguished Service Award Recipient.” Please refer to the attached nomination form for the nominating process below.
