Michael Phelon, coordinator of the LLCC Open Door Mentorship Program, was honored last Friday in Washington, D.C. with a 2018 Director’s Community Leadership Award for the Springfield division. Michael accepted the award on behalf of the organization he founded, The Outlet. He received the award from FBI Director Christopher Wray. According to the FBI, “Springfield officials asked The Outlet for help in 2017 after several shootings claimed the lives of three teenagers. The Outlet developed and hosted a camp that city officials believe helped keep youth and the community safe. Since 2004, The Outlet has provided a place for youth to gather.”
Michael was also a keynote speaker at the recent Mayor’s Unity Breakfast in Jacksonville. He was recognized for founding The Outlet and mentoring fatherless boys ages 8-22 as well as his work with the Open Door Mentorship Program at LLCC.
