Teaching neurodiagnostic technology remotely
April 19-25 was Neurodiagnostic Week, a time to celebrate the accomplishments of neurodiagnostic technologists and neurodiagnostic technology students everywhere. Diane Liesen, program director, neurodiagnostic technology, and Cynthia Smock, instructor of neurodiagnostic technology, shared how LLCC’s program is using Zoom and Padlet for remote learning and presentations.

LLCC to begin diagnostic medical sonography certificate program this fall
LLCC will begin offering a diagnostic medical sonography certificate program in fall 2020. The program prepares students to work in the field of ultrasound technology. “We are pleased to offer a diagnostic medical sonography program at LLCC,” says Dr. Cynthia Maskey, dean, LLCC Health Professions. “It provides a good opportunity, especially for current health care professionals, to move into this specialty field which is highly in demand.”
The program provides instruction, training and clinical experience to prepare students to secure their American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography credentials and entry-level work in the abdomen and obstetrics/gynecology specialty areas. Vascular instruction is also included in the coursework.
Eight students will be admitted for the fall 2020 semester. The college plans to increase student enrollment each fall semester.
Applicants must currently have a bachelor’s degree or an associate degree in an allied health program that is patient-care related and required clinical education. If the bachelor’s degree is not in a health-related field of study, the applicant will need to complete a certified nursing assistant (CNA or BNA) program prior to submitting an application.
Four college-level requisites must be met prior to beginning the core diagnostic medical sonography curriculum: an algebra, statistics or higher mathematics course; general college-level physics and/or radiographic physics; communication skills (including English, speech or composition); and human anatomy and physiology.

Nursing students inducted into Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society
On Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, seven nursing students were inducted into the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society. The students have excelled in their general education and nursing studies and completed a community service project. Family, friends and faculty gathered to celebrate their accomplishments. Nursing pediatric airway simulation
LLCC’s ADN 244, fourth semester nursing students participated in a pediatric airway simulation on Sept. 26. Charlene S. Aaron, Ph.D., R.N., chancellor with St. John’s College of Nursing and Sonja Harvey, D.N.P., R.N., associate dean of LLCC Nursing, collaborated for nursing students to share an experience as one of the first groups to utilize the mobile simulation lab. Gregg Kater and Barbara Huttman were the two instructors from St. John’s College to collaborate with Joi Mauk, LLCC nursing instructor. Students worked through identification and management of an emergent pediatric airway condition while using a high fidelity simulator to promote critical thinking and teamwork.

Jolene Lamb, coordinator, LLCC Culinary Institute, provided a cooking demonstration of succotash on WICS this morning. Sean Keeley, culinary specialist, will be demonstrating the recipe this evening at the Illinois Products Farmers Market.
LLCC to host new event, Health Care Expo, May 23
LLCC’s many health care career programs will be showcased at the Health Care Expo Thursday, May 23, from 6-8 p.m. Prospective students are invited to learn about the wide variety of LLCC’s health care degree, certificate and short-term program opportunities.
The free event begins in the Trutter Center and registration is available at www.llcc.edu/healthcare-expo or by calling 217-786-2577. The event will include tours of LLCC’s health professions labs along with displays, presentations and opportunities to speak to health care program directors and obtain information on applying for admission.
“Many students first think of nursing when they consider a health care career,” said Dr. Cynthia Maskey, dean of health professions. “LLCC’s Health Care Center of Excellence offers nursing programs at three levels: registered nurse (RN); licensed practical nurse (LPN) and certified nursing assistant (CNA). In addition, we offer programs in occupational therapy assistant, radiography, surgical technology, central sterile service technician, respiratory care, neurodiagnostic technology, emergency medical services (EMR, EMT, A-EMT and paramedic), medical coding, and exercise and sports science.”
Also on display at the expo will be short-term, health related programs including dental assistant, medical assistant, CNA to medical assistant, phlebotomy technician, veterinary assistant, pharmacy technician and massage therapy.
“This expo is an outstanding opportunity for individuals interested in launching a health care career to explore all of LLCC’s excellent health care programs offered at an affordable price,” said Dr. Maskey.
Nursing and EMS cross-disciplinary learning simulation
LLCC nursing and EMS students conducted a cross-discipline, mass disaster, triage simulation last Saturday in the Workforce Careers Center. Paramedic students were paired with nursing students as they worked to efficiently triage, treat and transport the victims. The collaborative exercise was covered by WICS/FOX Illinois and the State Journal-Register. Dr. Pamela Bradley, professor of nursing, and Nick Ferreira, EMS and medical coding program coordinator, provided interviews.

Students in the LLCC Radiography program and the Student Radiographers Club attended the 84th Annual ISSRT Conference in Peoria April 10-12 and participated in electronic poster submissions and scholar bowl. Allysa Cebuhar received first place for her poster on Eventration of the Diaphragm, Hannah Crocker received second place for her poster on The Role of Imaging Sciences in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate, and Holly Richardson received third place for her poster on Legg-Calve-Perthes. The scholar bowl team placed fourth out of 12 teams. Members included Allysa Cebuhar, Hannah Crocker, Halie Daniel, and Rachel McCall.

LLCC nursing students inducted into honor society
Ten second-year nursing students from the LLCC Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program were inducted into the Beta Nu Chapter of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society on March 28. The students had to maintain stringent academic requirements and complete a capstone community education project to be eligible for membership.
Students were honored at a special ceremony at the LLCC-Springfield campus. They received a certificate, an Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society pin and peach honor cords to wear at commencement. The co-advisors are Mary Goldstein, nursing professor, and Anatasia Till, nursing instructor.
The 2019 inductees are: Bethany Barry, Paige Dobson, Amanda Clevenger, Shyla Rogers, Manuel Caga-anan, Emily Williams, Andrea Staples, Alexis Irlam, Lori Dodwell and Shelby White.
The objective of the OADN Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor Society is to recognize the academic excellence of students in the study of ADN. The society encourages the pursuit of advance degrees in the profession of nursing as well as continuing education as a lifelong professional responsibility. The society also participates in the recruitment of qualified individuals into the nursing profession.
