Paul Hudson, D.Mgt., professor of business, spoke at the Jan. 4 grand opening of a new exhibit at the Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The display includes unique photographs, letters, artifacts, quilts and other items of historic significance. It will be open to the public throughout 2018. The event was covered by WICSFOX 55 and Illinois Times.

Chris McDonald, Ph.D., professor of political science, presented “From the Sangamon to the Rhine: The Letters and Photographs of Kent Hagler” Jan. 3 in the Paul Mickey Science Series at the Illinois State Museum. Rejected by the U.S. military as a result of a childhood injury, Hagler volunteered as an ambulance driver in the American Field Service. Hagler left his place at Harvard University and his family in Springfield and traveled to France to drive ambulances in support of the French army. Dr. McDonald’s talk examined Hagler’s experiences through the lens of the letters he sent home to his family in Springfield.

Chris McDonald, Ph.D., professor of political science, presented Nov. 14 on the continuing relevance of World War I to the Cache Club and on WWI collectibles at a meeting of the American Association of University Women.

Dr. Chris McDonald to present at Great War Encampment tomorrow

The Illinois State Military Museum will host a Great War Encampment tomorrow to tell the story of the First World War. LLCC is a co-sponsor of the event at which Dr. Chris McDonald, professor of political science, will speak at 11 a.m. on “Infantry Rifles of the Great War” and 3 p.m. on the “33rd Division at War, July-November 1918.” The museum is located at 1301 N. MacArthur in Springfield.

Political Science Professor Chris McDonald, Ph.D. gave two different WWI presentations at the IIlinois State Historical Society symposium on campus last week: one about Springfieldian Kent Hagler and the American Field Service and the other one with History Professor Mark Roehrs, Ph.D. (Katie McAfee, associate professor of accounting, moderated) on the 33rd Division.

On April 25, Professor McDonald gave a presentation on WWI to the Jacksonville Literary Group(s) at Jacksonville Country Club.

In the community–John Paul Jaramillo

English Professor John Paul Jaramillo is the featured author at the Sherman Library’s Third Thursday’s Reading Series Feb. 16, 6 to 8 p.m., 2100 E. Andrew Road. Professor Jaramillo’s 2012 collection of composite stories, “The House of Order,” was a Latino Book Award Finalist, and in 2013 the editors of “Latino Boom: An Anthology of U.S. Latino Literature” listed Jaramillo as one of its 2013 top 10 new Latino authors. Twelve Winters Press is releasing Jaramillo’s novel in stories, “Little Mocos,” later this year.

The Association of Illinois Electrical Cooperatives recently shared a story on their website and social media recognizing the current Electrical Lineman Distribution students at LLCC for their quick action to help revive an elderly man who’d lost consciousness in a restaurant during their lunch break.
