Mental Health First Aid training

LLCC Student Success is happy to share a great training opportunity for you: Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)! MHFA training covers:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges
  • How to interact with a person in crisis
  • How to connect a person with help
  • Expanded content on trauma, substance use and self-care

Many of the staff in LLCC Student Services have been through this training and feel that it is very useful in gaining some of the tools needed to recognize signs/symptoms of mental health challenges. We all play an important role in helping identify, support and refer students that may need additional assistance. This training is not intended to make anyone a counselor; rather, we believe that this provides great tools to help folks that are uniquely positioned in student-facing roles to feel more confident in providing initial support.

We have one more training opportunity this semester for you, via Zoom, conducted by a certified MHFA trainer from Heritage Behavioral Health Center. There are only 20 spots for the training, so get signed up as soon as possible. For the training, there are 1-2 hours of required pre-work that will need to be completed prior to your training date. If the pre-work is not completed, you will not be able to attend the training. The pre-work is an online module, including watching a webinar and pre-test. Please note that you will have to commit to be present during the entire training.

This session will provide an overview of Canvas Studio, the video learning platform integrated into the LLCC’s Canvas system. Canvas Studio allows you and your students to record, close caption and store videos within the Canvas system. Studio videos can be embedded directly into your course(s) through announcements, assignments, discussion posts and pages. Join this session to learn how Canvas Studio can easily support your courses through student use analytics, embedded quizzing and timeline comment functions.

AIeL workshop today

Barry Lamb, instructional designer; Karen Sisk, assistant professor of English and humanities; Sarah Laurent, instructor of nursing; and Stacey Olson, associate professor of biology​​​​​​, will present “Simple Technology — Big Impact” today, March 21, 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom.

The workshop covers how two instructional tools, which are easy to use, make a powerful impact on student learning! Participants will see a quick overview of both Padlet and Microsoft Sway (available with your LLCC login credentials), followed by a discussion (with demonstrations) with current faculty who use these tools for instruction and assignment creation. Hear how to easily get started with one or both of these instructional tools and see how other faculty are putting them to use in their classes, online and in person.

Karen Sisk, assistant professor of English and humanities​​​​​​​, will present “Promoting Mindfulness and Focus on Students With Short Writing Assignments” today, March 16, 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom.

To promote mindfulness and focus in our courses, we can incorporate short writing assignments such as letters and reflections done as homework or in class in which students set their course goals and how they will go about achieving them, reflect on their performance at various stages in the course and reflect on what they did well in the course. This workshop will give you ideas on how to design these types of assignments as well as discuss the benefits of incorporating these assignments both for students and instructors.
