Three handbooks by External Stakeholders Team now on employee portal

Three handbooks produced by the External Stakeholders Team — the Work-based Learning Guide, Regional Advisory Committee Handbook and Program Advisory Committee Handbook — are now available under the header “Handbooks” on the Employee Portal.

The Work-Based Learning Guide is designed to be a resource to faculty and staff to help prepare students to enter the workforce and enhance their opportunities to find gainful employment. This guide could provide faculty with ideas for their classroom, help programs identify workplace learning opportunities as well provides relevant documentation and forms. Some resources in the guide are:

  • Types of work-based learning that can be implemented both in class and throughout a program.
  • Definitions to create a common language across the college.
  • Forms that need to be filled out for internships, job shadowing and field trips/employer tours.
  • Sample online forms that faculty and staff can utilize to help implement internship programs.

The Regional Advisory Committee Handbook standardizes the structure for committees of community members who meet to advise Outreach Centers of various opportunities or concerns within the community relevant to the operation of each center.  Resources in the handbook include:

  • Defined meeting goals and structure.
  • Internal and external roles.
  • Expectations and processes.
  • A glossary of terms.
  • Templates.

The Program Advisory Committee Handbook provides guidance for committees made up of employers, external stakeholders and experts who advise and have input into various LLCC programs. Their role can support LLCC programs in several ways including curriculum development, educational enrichment, program review, recruitment, community awareness and legislation. Resources in the handbook include:

  • Defined purpose and function.
  • Roles of program directors, deans and faculty.
  • Templates and sample meeting agendas minutes and invitations.
  • Tips for productive meetings.
  • A glossary of terms.

Update from Campus Climate Team

The Campus Climate Team and its three workgroups (Safety and Inclusivity, Professional Development, Employee Satisfaction) meet regularly to review data, identify needs and develop projects for continuous quality improvement. Over the course of the last academic year, the team and its workgroup have continued to use data (primarily, PACE) to inform decisions as they carried out project work related to:

  • Inclusivity Speaker Series – In collaboration with the Workforce Equity Initiative, the Safety and Inclusivity Workgroup hosted a session during spring Professional Development Day on “Engaging With Equity: Identifying and Applying Inclusive Practices in Your Role at LLCC” led by the Office of Community College Research and Leadership.
  • Innovation in Diversity & Inclusion (IDI) Grant – The Safety and Inclusivity Workgroup formed an IDI committee to plan, develop and institute a spring 2021, internal grant process to promote diversity and inclusion at LLCC. Two projects were awarded – 1) a book discussion of “Is Everyone Really Equal? An introduction to key concepts in social justice education” for all student success coaches and 2) a targeted recruitment and retention project for Workforce Equity Initiative students.
  • Professional Development – Professional development has been incorporated into the performance evaluation process. A tab for professional development opportunities was created in LincIn to help employees more readily identify and share opportunities. Funds were designated for classified and professional employees to use for professional development each fiscal year.
  • Internal Information Distribution and Consumption – This Employee Satisfaction project is underway and aims to create a standardized institutional communication distribution guideline to help facilitate greater understanding, participation in and effectiveness of internal communication processes.

IDI Grant projects should fall into one of the following categories:

  • Training, Teaching and Learning

  • Address physical accessibility concerns
  • Purchase materials needed for implementation of inclusive practices by individuals, groups or departments
  • Fund tools needed to make a process more inclusive

An example of a related project developed at another institution of higher education: Accessible Wayfinding – This project worked to address the challenges of navigating a campus environment when there are visual, hearing or other impairments that impede an individual’s ability. The UC Inclusion App was developed to provide an interactive environment that fosters targeted and immediate communication pathways. The project included the addition of indoor wayfinding resources for in-building navigation, installation of beacons to mark accessible entrances and pathways, option to set accessibility preferences and ability to immediately report accessibility challenges.

We encourage you to collaborate with your colleagues and students to define and develop a project for this grant opportunity. If you have questions, please contact shelby.bedford@llcc.edu.
