BRANDT and LLCC collaborate on ag research

BRANDT, a leading agriculture retailer and manufacturer of agricultural specialty products, and LLCC Agriculture have formed a working relationship for on-campus research and development into production agriculture practices. The collaboration will help student development and help define the future of production agriculture practices. Both organizations share a commitment to the future of agriculture in central Illinois. This initiative will fit nicely with BRANDT’s extensive trials at the company’s research farms in Pleasant Plains and Lexington, Ill.

BRANDT and LLCC will work together on the main campus’ 45-acre “Land Lab,” focusing on corn and soybean production best practices. In addition, BRANDT will collaborate on research efforts at the Kreher Farm in Blue Mound, Ill. Both locations will be working to gain production agriculture knowledge, prepare students to further their education or develop students to enter the workforce. Plans are in place and work for the 2018 cropping season has already begun.

Farmer’s Share Lunch today

The LLCC Agriculture Club is hosting its Seventh Annual Farmer’s Share Lunch today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Trutter Center. The club is selling tickets for the meal that will include a boneless pork chop sandwich, roasted corn, potato salad, fruit, cookies, and tea or lemonade for $1. The cost represents the portion of a meal’s cost that actually goes back to the farmers who grew the food. The rest of the cost is for processing, marketing, transportation, etc. Only 125 tickets are available, and they may be purchased from any LLCC Ag Club member or by contacting club advisor Bill Harmon (786-2573 or bill.harmon@llcc.edu).

During the event, guests will also be able to test their agriculture knowledge with trivia questions from LLCC’s state champion College Bowl Team. The event is open to anyone in the campus community as an educational activity for the club.

Livestock Judging Team members earn All-American status; Ag Club wins awards at National PAS Conference

Two members of the LLCC Livestock Judging Team, coached by Craig Beckmier, professor of agriculture, recently earned All-American status at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

LLCC sophomores Mason Gordon and Adrian Austin were among 15 students nationwide to receive the honor.

To earn All-American status, in addition to excelling in the classroom, Gordon and Austin had to compete and score well at the major national collegiate livestock events including the Kansas City Royal, North American International Exposition in Louisville, and the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

Both students have been LLCC Agriculture Club officers while enrolled at the college. After completing their studies at LLCC, Gordon, originally from Rushville, Ind., plans to transfer to Purdue University to major in agribusiness and political science. Austin, from Mt. Vernon, Ill., intends on transferring to Kansas State University with a major in ag communications.

Also, members of the LLCC Agriculture Club, advised by Professor and Agriculture Program Coordinator Bill Harmon performed well at the National Postsecondary Agriculture Student (PAS) Conference in Louisville last month, where they competed against teams from 18 states. LLCC ag students receive awards at Illinois PAS conference

Lincoln Land Community College Agriculture students participated in competitions at the Illinois Postsecondary Agricultural Student Organization (PAS) fall conference in Peoria recently. The Illinois PAS provides opportunities for individual growth, leadership and career preparation and is one of the 10 career and technical student organizations that has been approved by the U.S. Department of Education as an integral part of career and technical education. Ag program wins statewide Innovation Award

Ag wins Innovation AwardLLCC’s “Head Start Ag Safety Program” won a 2013 Innovation Award from the Illinois Council of Community College Administrators (ICCCA). The award was presented yesterday at the ICCCA’s conference in downtown Springfield. Rich Teeter, associate professor of agriculture, described the program as a unique collaboration involving LLCC, a statewide business association and a non-profit organization. Accepting the award on behalf of the college were Dr. Charlotte Warren, president; Teeter, Bill Harmon, professor of agronomy, Dr. Eileen Tepatti, vice president of academic services, and Dave Green, dean of business and technologies.

Last spring, a group of LLCC agriculture students were professionally trained and certified at the Asmark Institute Agri-center in Bloomington in subjects including confined space entry, hazardous materials and various safety procedures. The safety training program was provided to the students, free of charge, by the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association (IFCA) and the Asmark Institute, a private, non-profit organization which assists agriculture retailers in complying with federal regulations.

Teeter said the training will not only enhance the resumes of the students when they pursue jobs in the ag industry, but more importantly, the lessons learned may save lives.

LLCC’s “Head Start” Ag Safety Program wins statewide award

The “Head Start” Ag Safety Program, in which a group of LLCC ag students were trained and certified last spring in subjects such as confined space entry, hazardous materials and safety procedures, has won the 2013 Illinois Council of Community College Administrators (ICCCA) Innovation Award.  The training was provided by the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association (IFCA) and the Asmark Institute in Bloomington. The goals of the training were to educate students about industry regulations and reduce farm accidents.  Rich Teeter, assistant professor of agriculture, coordinated the program which will now be offered to  other community colleges and further unite education and industry.
