Midday Yoga begins Oct. 14

Use your lunch hour as a time to unwind and reset your mind with Midday Yoga! Yoga is proven to benefit mental and physical health. Midday Yoga is a course designed to accommodate the needs of beginning yoga students as well as experienced practitioners. Participants will practice physical postures that stretch and open the body. ALL and Illinois State Museum host “The Ripple” Sept. 22

The LLCC Academy of Lifelong Learning and the Illinois State Museum invite the public to “The Ripple” on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Thorne Deuel Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum, 502 S. Spring St. The presentation is part of the “Standing on Her Shoulders” speaker series being held in recognition of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.

“The Ripple” will provide first-person interpreters portraying five Illinois women who each played a role in the quest for female suffrage: Mary Disseler as Mary Livermore, Mary Beth Maloney as Jane Addams, Kathryn Harris as Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Carly Shank as Grace Wilbur Trout and Cheri Beever as Betty Friedan.

The second portion of the program will feature contemporary women from differing backgrounds in a conversation about their experiences seeking equality. The women include: Roni Betts, retired financial analyst; Dr. Vicki Davis, LLCC trustee, Air Force retiree and educator; Vena Garrett, former owner of service businesses and educator; Barbara Rowe, initially a flight attendant, later an attorney and judge; and Dr. Qing Yang, anesthesiologist.

“Ethics, Morality and Contemporary Values” today, 6 p.m.

Colin Suchland, Ph.D., professor of sociology, LLCC; Timothy McKenzie, professor of journalism and philosophy, LLCC; and Adriana M. Crocker, LLB, Ph.D., professor of political science, UIS, will serve as panelists at “Ethics, Morality and Contemporary Values” today at 6 p.m. in the Thorne Deuel Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum, 502 S. Spring St. This panel presentation will explore the use of truth and facts in contemporary life. The presentation is a first in the series “Finding Truth in the Age of Alternative Facts” hosted by LLCC’s Academy of Lifelong Learning and the Illinois State Museum. The moderator for all three programs will be Jim Leach, news director of News/Talk 94.7 and 970 WMAY. The LLCC Academy of Lifelong Learning will hold its annual Chilli Supper Sunday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Temple B’rith Sholom Social Hall, 1004 S. 4th St., Springfield. The public is invited to attend. The cost is $8 per person and free for youth ages 8 and under.

The supper will feature chilli made by Les Eastep, well-known Springfield chilli chef and cook-off judge who recently qualified for the ICS World Championship Chili Cook-off in Ankeny, Iowa. Also on the menu are hot dogs, chilli dogs, beverages and desserts, with carryout available.

The event will include a book and puzzle exchange along with exhibits about LLCC’s Academy of Lifelong Learning programs and activities. For more information, contact LLCC Community Education at 786-2432.
