LLCC is celebrating African-American History Month during February with various events. The theme for this year’s observance is “Vision 2020: Elevate, Accentuate, Illuminate Your Future.” The LLCC African-American History Month Committee and LLCC Student Life are event co-sponsors unless otherwise noted.

This week’s events include:

  • Monday, Feb. 24 – Voter Registration Day, sponsored by the LLCC Black Student Union, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., A. Lincoln Commons.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 26 – African-American Food and Vendor Day, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., A. Lincoln Commons. The event features free samples of African-American food, displays exhibiting the wares of African-American entrepreneurs and “Saxophone and African-American Poetry Improvisations” performed by LLCC retired business law professor and jazz musician Virgil Rhodes, J.D.
  • Friday, Feb. 28 – “Illuminate Your Destiny,” the African-American History Month finale, featuring LLCC alum Kenneth Humble with the Kenny Humble Group, noon to 1:30 p.m., A. Lincoln Commons.

  • Saturday, Feb. 22 – “Expressions: In Living Color,” a college-wide unity dance, 9 p.m. to midnight, Trutter Center. The event is co-sponsored by the LLCC Black Student Union, Logger Activities Board and the Open Door Mentorship program.

The Dynamics of Code Switching” presented by Justin Rose, director of diversity and inclusion at University of Illinois Springfield, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Robert H. Stephens Room, Menard Hall. The event is free to students with a student ID and $5 for non-students. Register for this event by calling 786-2241.

Activities begin today with the African-American History Month Kickoff featuring Rosevelt Pratt with the African Drum and Dance Ensemble and LLCC student Gerald Cole Jr. of Torch_Nation from noon to 1:30 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. The event is co-sponsored by the LLCC African-American History Month Committee and LLCC Student Life.

LLCC will again celebrate African-American History Month during February with various events. The theme for this year’s observance is “Embracing Our Past, Reinforcing the Present and Providing Hope for the Future.”

Monday, Feb. 1 – African-American History Month Kickoff, noon to 1 p.m., A. Lincoln Commons. The event features LLCC alum Kenneth Humble with the Kenny Humble Trio.

Wednesday, Feb. 3 – Chahrm the Band with Ada Lou Presents A Taste of Jazz, Rhythm and Blues; featuring Crisp, Rogers with Ada Lou, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., A. Lincoln Commons.

Monday, Feb. 8 – Voter Registration Day sponsored by the LLCC Black Student Union, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., A. Lincoln Commons.

Wednesday, Feb. 10 – Soup & Stories: “NAACP – Walk from the Past to the Present,” 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Robert H. Stephens Room, Menard Hall. Free to students with a student ID; $3 for non-students. Presenter is Teresa Haley, Elected President of Illinois NAACP Chapter, who will discuss the history of the NAACP.

Monday, Feb. 15 – 4-H and the Union Baptist Church Youth Mime Unspoken Ministry, noon to 1 p.m., A. Lincoln Commons.
