Phi Theta Kappa Receives Honors in Action Grant
LLCC’s Alpha Epsilon Kappa chapter of Phi Theta Kappa received a $420 grant to support the research stage of their annual Honors in Action (HIA) project. The theme of this cycle of HIA projects is “The Power of Stories,” and LLCC’s AEK chapter has drafted a preliminary research question asking, “How is preservation of local black history related to community formation for younger generations?”
This HIA research question acknowledges our community’s conflicted racial history while focusing on the potential to preserve not only stories of pain and trauma, but on the opportunities to celebrate, move forward, and build community, especially in our community’s younger generations.
LLCC’s chapter was one of only seven PTK chapters in the Illinois Region to receive grants this fall. The grant will assist students serving on the chapter’s project committee as they visit three local museums as part of their research process: the Route History Museum, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Abraham Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Each site was chosen for its ability to shed light on the history of race in our local community. The grant will also provide an honorarium for a speaker to facilitate a workshop for PTK Team Members about the ethics of working with marginalized groups.

Health Care & Human Services Career Expo happens Oct. 29
The Career Center is excited to host the Health Care and Human Services Career Expo on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon in A. Lincoln Commons. This informal event presents a valuable opportunity for our students to explore various career paths within the health care and human services industries in our community. Employers attending include Memorial, Springfield Clinic, SIU Medicine, HSHS, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Illinois Department of Human Services and many more.
We encourage you to motivate students to attend and take advantage of this chance to connect with local employers. Your support can make a significant impact on their career journeys!
Submit Veterans Day recognition form
The college will honor veterans at its 29th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony, sponsored by LLCC Student Life. The ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 in A. Lincoln Commons with a reception to follow. This event honors all veterans, including LLCC faculty, staff and students who served in the armed forces, and it is open to the public.
We look forward to honoring those who have served our country. To be included in the printed program, please complete this Veterans Day Recognition Form no later than Nov. 1.

RECIPE FOR CYBERSECURITY: Enabling multi-factor authentication
Authentication to suit your taste
Welcome to week 4! Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is just like cake — the more layers the better! When MFA is enabled, it will require anyone logging into an account to navigate a two-step process to prove their identity — usually via a push notification.
How it works: When logging into your account, you first provide your password or passphrase. Next, you will provide an extra way of proving that you’re you; this is typically done through:
- An extra PIN (personal identification number)
- An extra security question like, “What’s your favorite pet’s name?”
- An additional code, either emailed or texted
- A biometric identifier like facial recognition or a fingerprint
- A unique number generated by an “Authenticator App”
- A secure token is a separate piece of hardware (like a key fob that holds information) that verifies a person’s identity with a database or system

LLCC Facilites welcomes Sam Cox!
LLCC Facilities welcomes Samantha Cox to the team. Sam’s first day was Oct. 17. She graduated in May from Blackburn College. Blackburn is known for its Student Managed Work Program. While there, Sam was the manager of Campus Services, so she brings that experience to LLCC. Sam will concentrate her work on Sangamon Hall. Welcome to LLCC, Sam!
