Professional Development Day schedule announced
The Professional Development Day Planning Committee is pleased to announce the final schedule for Professional Development Day on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Details for the day can be found by clicking here. You will find the full schedule, session information, luncheon keynote information, and, back by popular demand, a download for the Professional Development Day app for your smartphone. You will find a wide variety of sessions this Professional Development Day. Please note that everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend any session on the schedule. While a session may appear to not be directly relevant to your work here at LLCC, it does not mean that you wouldn’t benefit from the presentation and discussion. Please review all sessions carefully. If you see something that peaks your interest, attend that session! Simply learning more about how different areas of the college function can help each of us serve our students more effectively.
The committee looks forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, Nov. 1!
Annual Report and FORWARD produced by PRM now online!
The 2015-16 Annual Report is now online. A limited number of printed copies are also available in the Public Relations and Marketing office.
Also, the Oct. 2016 FORWARD magazine is online. Print copies are available at the Information Desk in A. Lincoln Commons or for larger quantities, visit the lower level east hallway of Menard Hall.
Both publications are written and designed by the LLCC Public Relations and Marketing office.
Honors Program Krispy Kreme Sale
The Honors Program Student Organization is once again selling Krispy Kreme donuts in the A. Lincoln Commons today, Oct. 12 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Original glazed donuts are available, and the cost is $8 per dozen. Proceeds from this monthly fundraiser will help the Honors Program students pay for their annual Fall Leadership Retreat and Chicago Museums Day Trip. Please consider purchasing a dozen (or two!).
DVAM Week of Action (and Jeans Day!)
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month Week of Action is next week, Oct. 17-21. SAVE Taskforce and the Feminist Activist Coalition will have programming throughout the week and would love your participation! Throughout the week, we encourage everyone to post about their participation in DVAM Week of Action events with the hashtag #TakeAStand
Week-long Activities:
Feminist Activist Coalition will be sponsoring a used cell phone drive throughout the week and sending the cell phones to a domestic violence resource center. Wireless phones offer a lifeline for those effected by domestic violence, providing a way to dial 911 without needing their personal phone. Collection boxes for old, used phones will be in Student Life and Advising, Counseling, and Career Services.
Write Witness…to Stories of Love, Loss, Healing, Help, Pain, and Promise. LLCC’s Writing Center is celebrating the National Day on Writing in connection with Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Visit the Center anytime during the week and contribute a response to the display, or post your reply on the Writing Center Facebook page.
Monday, Oct. 17 – Pledge Day
As members of the LLCC community, pledge to use your education, experiences, and voices to speak out against intimate partner violence. Sign the pledge and post on social media about why you took the pledge or the steps you will take to live up to your pledge. Remember, use #TakeAStand to be a part of the national conversation on ending domestic violence!
Tuesday, Oct. 18 – Take a Stand
In correlation with the National Week of Action theme, faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to sign up to take a stand against domestic and intimate partner violence- literally! Symbolic of our refusal to be passive bystanders of intimate partner violence in our community, we will have at least one person “taking a stand” in A. Lincoln Commons from 8:00AM-5:00PM. Participants can sign up for a time slot that fits your schedule here. Share a message of your commitment to taking a stand against domestic violence using #TakeAStand.
Wednesday, Oct.19 – Paper Cranes for Healing the Violence
Send a message of support with this activity focused on representing the healing and good fortune we wish to send survivors and their loved ones. Stop by A. Lincoln Commons throughout the day to make paper cranes out of recycled paper. The cranes will be hung around the Commons and be used for future events.
Thursday, Oct. 20 – Purple Thursday
Those committed to ending domestic violence around the country will be wearing purple on this day to bring awareness to the topic. Wear your purple and bring your $5 to the Student Life Office to participate in the Feminist Activist Coalition’s Jeans Day benefiting Sojourn Shelter and Services, a local domestic violence resource center.
Campus Visit Day results are in!
A total of 349 individuals attended Campus Visit Day Monday, and this year, the morning and evening events were nearly the same in attendance for the first time. (Usually, the morning session has approximately 75% of the total attendance.) We again thank all who helped with the event either by giving a presentation, engaging with visitors at a display table, assisting students in applying to LLCC, providing a career assessment or describing the many services and offerings of LLCC. We appreciate it and couldn’t do it without you.
In the news
Marnie Record, workforce specialist, Value Added Local Foods program, wrote this week’s Epicuriosity 101 column in the State Journal-Register titled, “Tis the seasion for garlic planting.”
