Today: National Library Week celebration continues; Student Art Show reception

The LLCC Library continues its celebration of National Library Week by hosting a Book Art Contest, in conjunction with Leslie Stalter’s Art 115 – Three Dimensional Design class. Students will drop off their submissions at 2:30 p.m., and library staff will vote on their favorites. Winners will be announced at the next class meeting Tuesday, April 21. Submissions will remain on display inside the library. Other events for Thursday include:

• Food for Fines – the first 100 people to bring in a non-perishable donation will win a free book light. You don’t have to have library fines to donate! All proceeds benefit the Central Illinois Food Bank.
• Free candy at the Reference and Access Services desks.
• Add to the “What’s Your Favorite Book?” poster.
• Daily raffle drawing! Winner will receive a $5 gift certificate to the bookstore.

The LLCC art department welcomes the LLCC community and the LLCC Student Art Show 2015public to join them at a reception for the Annual Juried Student Art Show this evening from 5:30–7:30 p.m. outside the Murray Gallery. Award winners will be announced in several categories. A special invitation is extended to all students who put forth the effort to enter their artwork for jurying. The student show will be open for viewing until May 17.

Donate $5 for Jeans Day today and support the Brian McMillen Veterans Scholarship. Donations are being accepted by the Student Life Office.

Edible Books contest today in the LLCC Library

– Please join us for the Edible Books Contest! Submissions are accepted for drop-off between 7:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., and voting will held from 11:00 a.m.–noon. At noon, the two favorites will be announced and each will win a $25 Barnes and Noble gift certificate! Beginning at noon, everyone is invited to stop by and help eat the edible books!

Works of art from Trutter Museum on display in library

Selected works of art from the Trutter Museum World HeritageTrutter art2 Collection are now on display in the LLCC Library. The art pieces are part of the personal collection owned by Philip and Mary Kathryn Trutter and generously donated to LLCC. National Library Week begins today

The LLCC Library will celebrate National Library Week starting today, April 13 and continuing through the end of the week. During the week, the Library will give out free candy, host a daily raffle drawing, invite participants to create a “What’s Your Favorite Book?” poster, and host a variety of daily events. Please join us!

LLCC Library to host “Food for Fines” campaign to benefit Central Illinois Food Bank

The LLCC Library will kick off a “Food for Fines” campaign during National Library Week, April 12-18 and continuing throughout the spring semester. LLCC will donate all collections to the Central Illinois Food Bank. Hy-Vee groceries will match up to $500 worth of items collected.

Food for Fines allows students, faculty and staff to pay off fines or fees on their library account by donating non-perishable items for the Central Illinois Food Bank. For each item donated, individuals will receive $5 off of their total fines.

Suggested items include canned meat, fruit, vegetables and pasta sauce; chili, beef stew and other soups; cereal, pasta, rice and macaroni and cheese; boxed meals and peanut butter; along with non-grocery items such as soap, toilet paper and diapers. Targeting Autism: A National Forum on Serving Library Patrons on the Spectrum

The Illinois State Library was awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Forum grant to help libraries better serve patrons and family members impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Mary DiMaggio and Amanda Wiesenhofer from the LLCC Library, and Linda Chriswell, accessibility services professional, have been selected to participate in the Targeting Autism forums. The purpose of the forums is to develop an action plan to include the following: 1. Implementation plan to increase ASD awareness, education and support services; 2. Implementation plan to improve and streamline online access to the wealth of information intended to provide support for families and individuals with ASDs; and 3. Infrastructure plan to ensure sustainable, interorganizational partnerships committed to enhancing ASD support statewide. This project explores how libraries can work with diverse community organizations and programs to address the topic of ASD, through training, education and support services. The content of the action plan will be included in a subsequent grant proposal to IMLS. WayMark Systems (a partner in the Targeting Autism Project) is conducting a survey to better understand the needs, priorities and interests around ASD in order to guide the development and delivery of ASD information services by community libraries across the state. The Targeting Autism Forum will present the survey results at the March forum, and use the results to facilitate discussion.   • Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
  • Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
