African-American History Month activities

LLCC is celebrating African-American History Month during February with various events. The theme for this year’s observance is “Celebrating Our Strengths While Overcoming Our Challenges.”

Activities continue today with “Evolution of Music” Flashback Wednesday and voter registration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. Today’s events are co-sponsored by the African-American History Month Committee and the LLCC Black Student Union.

BSU hosting jeans day tomorrow

The LLCC Black Student Union is hosting the “Bountiful Blessing Food Drive – Jeans Day” tomorrow, Feb. 15. All proceeds will benefit the LLCC Food Pantry. Anyone interested in participating can make a minimum donation of $5 or bring in a minimum donation of 10 nonperishable food items to the LLCC Student Life office. Foods in high demand at the food pantry include:

  • Canned pasta-(ready-to-eat/microwaveable bowls)
  • Soups (ready-to-eat/microwaveable bowls)
  • Tuna pouches or tuna, chicken or ham ready-to-eat kits
  • Pop tarts
  • Fruit snacks
  • Juice
  • Macaroni and cheese cups
  • Granola bars (protein bars)
  • Trail mix
  • Crackers
  • Cereal bars
  • Fruit cups

“Coffee with the Editors” today, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Lamp will host “Coffee with the Editors” today from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons.

Please come grab a cup of coffee. It is free to anyone who likes and follows The Lamp online or on social media. Otherwise, it is $1 a cup. The goal is to increase online engagement for the student newspaper.

Activities continue today with a movie review and discussion of “Marshall.” Screenings will be held at at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Robert H. Stephens Room, Menard Hall. The movie features the story of Thurgood Marshall, the American civil rights leader who helped change the landscape of American society.

LLCC transfer discussion Feb. 21

Don't Fear the Future, Feb. 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., A. Lincoln CommonsLLCC TRIO and Student Life will present “Don’t Fear the Future!” on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. Students will hear from LLCC faculty and staff who have made the transition from community college to a four-year university and will have the opportunity to ask questions and chat over appetizers. The event will feature Dr. Carmen Allen, Becky Croteau, Dr. Jason Dockter, Leslie Ross and Thom Whalen.

LLCC Chemistry Club trivia night Feb. 23

Sign up for a trivia night hosted by the LLCC Chemistry Club! It will take place on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, in the student union located in the lower level Menard Hall. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the event runs from 7 p.m. to approximately 9:30 p.m.

Participants can sign up as part of a team or join a team when they arrive. Each team can have up to 10 members. The cost is $10 per person, and payment (cash or check) will be collected the night of the event. Checks should be made out to LLCC.

Topics will include English, history, general science and more. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners. Register for your seats online. Hope to see you there!
