Ag Club blood drive a big success!

The LLCC Ag Club was recognized by the Central Illinois Community Blood Center for having a very successful blood drive on March 28. Results were:

  • 59 donors registered
  • 52 units collected
  • 14 first time donors
  • Over 150 lives saved

LLCC Student Life is hosting a blood drive today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the student union, lower level of Menard Hall. All donors are asked to please eat before donation and present a photo ID. FAC showing “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”

The LLCC Feminist Activist Coalition is hosting movie reviews and discussions of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” The screenings will take place today at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. The film chronicles the life of Deborah Lacks and journalist Rebecca Skloot’s discovery of the harvesting of Henrietta’s cancerous cells. The immortal cell line, now known as HeLa, came from Lacks’s cervical cancer cells in 1951.

The LLCC Black Student Union is hosting an open mic night today, March 20, in A. Lincoln Commons from 5-8 p.m. Open mic night is a social event sponsored by the BSU where LLCC students and staff have a platform to openly express their voice and talents through poetry, singing, dance, instrumental solos and spoken word. Come showcase your talents and let your voice be heard!

#TalkItOut workshop today

The LLCC Feminist Activist Coalition is hosting a “Talk It Out” workshop and discussion that explores gender bias. The discussion is co-sponsored by the Sexual Assault & Violence Education Task Force and will take place today in the Robert H. Stephens Room, from 1-3 p.m. The featured topic is sexual harassment and how women and men can advocate and educate each other about solutions and healing. Students, faculty and staff are asked to wear black in solidarity with victims of sexual harassment. Lunch will be provided.

Soup & Stories “The Radium Girls: An Illinois Tragedy” today at 11 a.m.

The LLCC Feminist Activist Coalition  is hosting a Soup & Stories today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event features Tara McClellan McAndrew, writer for NPR Illinois, presenting “The Radium Girls: An Illinois Tragedy.” In the early 1900s, women hired by the U.S. Radium Corporation as watch-dial painters later died from radium poisoning. Women who worked in the plant located in Ottawa, Ill., were victims of the radium poisoning. The Soup & Stories event will take place in the large lounge of A. Lincoln Commons. The event is free for students and $3 for faculty and staff.
