English Professor John Paul Jaramillo has been invited by the Prairie Art Alliance Gallery to read from his new book, The House of Order, on Nov. 20. The program runs from 5 to 7 p.m. in the H.D. Smith Gallery in the Hoogland Center for the Arts, 420 So. 6th Street, Springfield.

Jerry Nelson, truck driver training instructor, represented LLCC at a motorcycle safety event Saturday, Oct. 4 at Hall’s Harley Davidson. Jerry used an LLCC semi to demonstrate how truck drivers and motorcyclists can share the road safely.
LLCC-Taylorville in the community
LLCC-Taylorville helped Taylorville and Christian County celebrate their 175th anniversary this past weekend by participating in the “Celebrate 175” parade. The theme for the parade was past, present and/or future. LLCC-Taylorville chose the future theme and featured children as our future. The children dressed up in different uniforms to represent various certificate and degree programs LLCC offers. Dr. Warren was the keynote speaker at the Army Cooks School graduation Thursday, Aug. 21, at Camp Lincoln. The Army Cook’s School is a four week training program and the first eight days are held in the Culinary and Baking labs in Workforce, coordinated by Jay Kitterman, director, Culinary Institute and special events. After spending a week at Lincoln Land they conduct dining and field operations at Camp Lincoln. The current graduating class consisted of 17 future Army cooks from all over the United States from California to Maine. Lincoln Land is proud to partner with the Army on this program.

On Friday, August 15, be sure to stop by the Hobbies, Arts & Crafts Building at 3:15pm to see Jolene Adams do a “Unique Cupcakes” demonstration, making strawberry shortcake cupcakes in a mason jar, chocolate turtle cupcakes in a mason jar and fondant decorated cupcakes.
Also, throughout the week, Jay Kitterman, Nancy Sweet and Jolene Adams will be judging food competitions.
Al Shull wins first place in State Fair professional art exhibition
Al Shull, professor of art, was awarded first place in the painting category of the 2014 Illinois State Fair Professional Art Exhibition. His painting is entitled “Release of the Spirit” and will be on display with other winning artworks in the Artisan Building of the State Fairgrounds, open daily Aug. 8 -16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and until noon on Aug. 17.
2nd Place in the painting category went to LLCC art alum Amanda Grieve for her work, “Judgment.”
