LLCC Choir performs tomorrow

The LLCC Choir will be performing at noon on Friday in A. Lincoln Commons for all students and staff. Please come to hear these talented students!  In addition, the public is invited for a performance by the LLCC Choir at 7 p.m. Friday in the Commons.

video game tournamentFaculty, staff and students are invited to the first LLCC Video Game Design Tournament TODAY from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. Seven student teams are finalizing their work and will be ready to show the college community their games. Tournament attendees will have access to try out the games and use their smartphones to vote for best game, most innovative game and most enjoyable game. Student teams can win prizes provided by sponsors including an iPod Touch, flash drives, portable hard drives, graphic tablets, studio headphones and 3D modeling/rendering software. Many students on the teams are enrolled in the Video Game Design I course taught by Matt Shaver, professor of digital media. Some team members have completed art or music courses to complement their team, and some student teams have reached out to friends in the music department, tapping into their creative energies to create both music and sound effects. Jason Waddell, associate professor of music, will provide live music via his improv band at the event. Don’t miss it!

LLCC Big Band upcoming “LOVE” performances April 25 and May 9

The LLCC Big Band will perform three upcoming concerts entitled “LOVE.” All are free and open to the public.

The Big Band will perform a “LOVE Senior Prom” concert at the Central Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 501 S. 4th in Springfield on Monday, April 25, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The concert/dance will feature Big Band standards such as “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” “LOVE,” “In the Mood” and many more.

Note: Corrected Date – The Big Band will next perform the “LOVE Senior Prom” at Pleasant Hill Village, 1010 W. North St. in Girard on Monday, May 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This concert/dance will feature Big Band standards such as “My Funny Valentine,” “Blue Bossa,” “Misty” and “Jump, Jive and Wail.”

Recital Series features Paul Van Heuklom May 1

Paul VHPaul Van Heuklom, professor of English, will perform a Native American flute concert in the LLCC Recital Series on Sunday, May 1. The 4 p.m. performance in the Trutter Center on the LLCC Springfield campus is free and open to the public.

Van Heuklom is a member of the Sangamon Valley Flute Circle. Although he views the Native American flute as primarily a meditative and solo instrument, he has performed at such diverse venues as Blackburn College, the Decatur Lakeside Music and Arts Festival, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind, Springfield High School Multicultural Festival, LLCC Multicultural Fest and Recital Series, and the Clinton, Ill. 4th of July Celebration.

The recital is the final in the 2015-16 season.

The Lamp student newspaper wins awards at statewide competition

The Lamp staffThe Lamp won the top staff award and 10 other individual journalism awards at a recent statewide competition.

The awards were presented April 8 during the Illinois Community College Journalism Association conference held at Harold Washington College in Chicago.

This is the second year in a row that Lamp staff won first place in the Mike Foster General Excellence Award. The Lamp’s editor is Madison Mings of Springfield, print editor is Isaac Warren of Springfield and online editor is Teresa Brummett of Salisbury. “We have a great group of people, each putting out great work,” said Tim McKenzie, assistant professor of journalism and humanities and The Lamp advisor. “A newspaper requires a lot of contributors, many working behind the scenes. This award reflects on how everyone is doing a great job, especially our editors.”  Continue reading

Student Art Show now open; winners announced at reception this evening

BinhLLCC’s Annual Student Art Show is now open in the James S. Murray Gallery on the second floor of Menard Hall. Robert Sill, curator of art for the Illinois State Museum, served as juror for the show. The art department of LLCC welcomes the LLCC community and the public to a reception this evening from 5:30 – 7:30 where award winners will be announced in several categories. The student show will be open for viewing through May 5.

Emerald Underground performs Sunday in Recital Series

The Emerald Underground will perform in the LLCC Recital Series this Sunday, April 3 at 4 p.m. in the Trutter Center on the Springfield campus.

emerald undergroundThe Emerald Underground, consisting of Jack White, Chas Blythe, Megan Turner, Nat Radwine, Lori McKenzie and Bill McKenzie, brings Celtic music into the 21st century in a fusion of jigs, reels, ballads and rock-based tunes. What was originally the vision of former LLCC student Lanny Montgomery has evolved into the longest running Celtic band of its kind in central Illinois. In its 2001 origin as Stone Ring Circle, Montgomery brought together a band of musicians who had come from rock, blues, jazz and classical backgrounds to form a new and different sound for local audiences.
