Join the Academy of Lifelong Learning this Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Thorne Deuel Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum, 502 S. Spring St. Our state historian, Dr. Samuel Wheeler, will present “Two Centuries to Celebrate: Illinois at the Bicentennial,” which focuses on the ways our state has celebrated milestone anniversaries from statehood in 1818 through the centennial in 1918, as well as the sesquicentennial in 1968. He will discuss the ongoing bicentennial celebration plans and will help us remember what makes our state unique, which events are truly worthy of celebration and the many Illinoisans who are worthy of admiration.

The program is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.

A special bicentennial series of programs, “The Culture and Heritage of Illinoisans,” will be held the third Sunday of every month from February through October 2018. The series is presented by LLCC’s Academy of Lifelong Learning in collaboration with the Illinois State Museum and will feature several Road Scholar speakers offered by Illinois Humanities.

The first program in the series is a presentation by Illinois State Historian Dr. Samuel Wheeler. It will be held on Sunday, Feb.18, 2 p.m. in the Thorne Deuel Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum, 502 S. Spring St. The program is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required.

Midday Yoga is a course designed to accommodate the needs of beginning yoga students as well as experienced practitioners. The Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) will observe its 25th anniversary at the ALL Winter Celebration on Friday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Trutter Center. Guests may attend the free event, which includes lunch, entertainment and cruise-themed activities. Register by calling 217-786-2477 by Tuesday, Jan. 23.

ALL offers educational adventures to individuals 50 and older. Currently ALL has more than 400 members and is accepting new ones. Classes and activities are planned and presented by members who enjoy meeting interesting friends, sharing ideas, exploring topics of interest, learning from one another and having fun.

ALL was formed in 1992 under the sponsorship of LLCC. The following year, ALL was chartered as part of the national Elderhostel (now Road Scholar) Institute Network. It was the first such organization chartered in the state of Illinois for seniors who would determine for themselves what they wanted to learn. The continuity of ALL over 25 years is a testament to that early recognition of the power of continued pursuit of knowledge by adults as they age.

A free community workshop will be held at LLCC in the Trutter Center on Nov. 8. It is open to anyone interested in learning more about LGBTQ issues. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to join the Phoenix Center for this training. LLCC’s Academy of Lifelong Learning will hold its annual Chilli Supper Sunday, Sept. 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Temple B’rith Sholom Social Hall, 1004 S. 4th St., Springfield. The public is invited to attend. The cost is $7 per person and free for youth ages 8 and under.

The supper will feature chilli made by Les Eastep, well-known Springfield chilli chef and cook-off judge. Also on the menu are hot dogs, chilli dogs, beverages and desserts, with carryout available.

The event will include a book and puzzle exchange along with exhibits about Academy of Lifelong Learning programs and activities. New this year is a trivia contest at 2 p.m. Teams of 10 can participate at $10 per person. The winning team will receive a $150 prize.
