LLCC is celebrating African-American History Month during February with various events. The theme for this year’s observance is “Vision 2020: Elevate, Accentuate, Illuminate Your Future.” The LLCC African-American History Month Committee and LLCC Student Life are event co-sponsors unless otherwise noted.

Upcoming events include:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 12 – Soup & Stories “Do I Talk Too Loud? The Dynamics of Code Switching” presented by Justin Rose, director of diversity and inclusion at University of Illinois Springfield, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Robert H. Stephens Room, Menard Hall. The event is free to students with a student ID and $5 for non-students. Register for this event by calling 786-2241.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 19 – “Whatchu Kno Bout Us?”, African-American history trivia, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., A. Lincoln Commons.
  • Saturday, Feb. 22 – “Expressions: In Living Color,” a college-wide unity dance, 9 p.m. to midnight, Trutter Center. The event is co-sponsored by the LLCC Black Student Union, Logger Activities Board and the Open Door Mentorship program.

Illinois Community College Assessment Fair 2020

Illinois Community College Assessment Fair 2020: Assessment with VisionLLCC will be hosting the 24th Annual Illinois Community College Assessment Fair on Feb. 28, 2020, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please consider attending the conference to learn about assessment efforts at community colleges across the state and to support LLCC colleagues who are presenting. Illinois Freedom Project exhibit

The Illinois Freedom Project Exhibit. Feb. 11-13, A. Lincoln Commons, Springfield Campus. A multimedia initiative that teaches about the journey from slavery to freedom in Illinois. LLCC Outreach Centers will host Lincoln-themed activities during the week of Feb. 10.
In observance of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, LLCC will host the Illinois Freedom Project travelling exhibit from Feb. 11-13 in A. Lincoln Commons. The Illinois Freedom Project is a multimedia initiative that shares the stories of freedom through the lens of the people, places and events in Illinois history. The exhibit is travelling to Looking for Lincoln communities throughout the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area through 2020.

Tomorrow, Feb. 12, Lincoln Home interpretive staff will also be on campus from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. talking about Lincoln and his time in Springfield, and there will be opportunities to take a photo with a Lincoln reenactor from 8-9:30 a.m.

In addition, LLCC Outreach Centers will host Lincoln-themed activities during the week. On Feb. 12, noon to 2 p.m., LLCC-Litchfield will host an exhibit of Lincoln artifacts from the Historical Society of Montgomery County, and author Carol Alexander will be on hand at LLCC-Taylorville to share local Lincoln stories. LLCC-Jacksonville will hold a presentation from noon to 12:30 p.m. on Lincoln’s impact in Morgan County. Throughout the week, LLCC-Beardstown will feature showings of the movie “Lincoln” and personally guided tours of the Old Lincoln Courtroom and Museum.

Information on local Lincoln historic attractions will be available at all locations.

Opportunities to assist Gaye Catlin

As Gaye Catlin, former administrative assistant to the dean of health professions, continues her recovery from a serious accident, her family and friends have organized several opportunities to assist. A benefit will be held March 7, 4-10 p.m. at the Stonington American Legion, 401 W. North St. Visit the “Caring for the Catlins” Facebook page for updates on Gaye’s progress and more information on opportunities to participate in these efforts.

  • Friday, Feb. 7 – HIV/AIDS Awareness and Testing sponsored by the LLCC Black Student Union, 9-11 a.m., A. Lincoln Commons. Participants will be provided information concerning HIV/AIDS and can also be tested.

Activities continue today with “Embracing Diversity and Understanding Our Differences,” a panel discussion/open forum, 9-11 a.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. The event is co-sponsored by the LLCC African-American History Month Committee and LLCC Student Life.

LLCC hosted regional Academic Challenge

High school students at Academic ChallengeApproximately 280 students from 18 area high schools competed in the 24th annual regional Academic Challenge on Tuesday at LLCC. Students competed as individuals and as teams (of up to 14 students) testing in their choice of two of these subjects — biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics.

Katie Nix and Dr. Vern LindquistDuring registration and lunch, LLCC hosted exhibits for students to learn about opportunities at the college. Also, thanks to support from the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE), a $200 LLCC Foundation scholarship was awarded at the event.

Dr. Vern Lindquist presented at the Academic Challenge, and Bill Bade served as emcee. The event was organized by LLCC Mathematics and Computer Science faculty Lucinda Caughey and Matt Vespa. Amy Williams and Carrie Henry coordinated the catering.
