Juneteenth Freedom Walk held yesterday

The Juneteenth Committee would like to thank everyone for their participation in the Juneteenth Freedom Walk. Approximately 100 staff, faculty, students and community members participated. For those who couldn’t view Faith to Freedom, which was shown yesterday, please visit the LLCC Library’s Juneteenth webpage for the entire documentary.

Juneteenth Freedom Walk and documentary showing today

LLCC celebrates Juneteenth 1865. Freedom Walk.As a reminder, you’re invited to participate in the Juneteenth Freedom Walk today, June 19, at 8:30 a.m. Meet by the flag poles outside of A. Lincoln Commons for the start of this 1.25-mile walk around campus to commemorate the timeline of events leading up to Juneteenth’s Freedom Day. There will be a light continental breakfast afterward for participants.

In addition, showings of the documentary Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom (1 hour, 15 minutes) will take place today at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the LLCC Library, Room 1126. This 1.25-mile walk around campus will commemorate the timeline of events leading up to Juneteenth’s Freedom Day. The committee is encouraging all departments to gather a team for the walk, include students and wear Juneteenth colors — red, green, gold or black. For participants, there will be a light continental breakfast afterward and some Juneteenth swag. The event is also open to the public.

LLCC Alert test today

Each semester/term, LLCC tests its emergency alert system LLCC ALERT. LLCC ALERT allows the college to communicate with you by text, phone and email in an emergency, as well as for severe weather and other closures. Current employees and students are automatically enrolled in LLCC ALERT.

The next test is taking place today, Tuesday, June 13, at approximately 11 a.m. You will receive a test message from LLCC ALERT.

We encourage you to visit www.llcc.edu/alert and log in with your LLCC username and password to check your current contact information and manage how you receive emergency notifications. LLCC ALERT uses the information about you currently stored in the college’s Colleague system, and this information may need updating. Please add your office phone number if it is not listed, and make any other revisions needed.

LLCC Illinois SCOERs team receives 3D printer

LLCC Illinois SCOERs team members, Michele Leigh and Nicole SwansonErin Shanle, assistant professor of biology, and Jan Dowell, adjunct instructor of biology, are developing an open education resource (OER) textbook for LLCC ‘s Human Nutrition course as part of Illinois Support for Creation of Open Educational Resources (SCOERs) grant project funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education in the U.S. Department of Education. The LLCC Illinois SCOERs team received a 3D printer as part of the grant program, and Carmen Allen, professor of computer science, will design and develop projects for students to complete as a part of the class. The Human Nutrition course will incorporate a gardening project for students to learn how to grow their own food and to begin community gardens. The 3D printer will be used to produce gardening hand tools to support the gardening project and models of macromolecules associated with human nutrition to assist with student learning. The Illinois SCOERs grant project supports lessening financial barriers of textbooks costs for students and increasing community engagement by promoting community gardening. As part of the grant project, a team of LLCC employees with a variety of skills and expertise has been formed to support the OER process.

Ada Range tree dedication today

Today at 3:15 p.m. a there will be a short and informal dedication ceremony at the tree that has been planted in Adrienne (Ada) Range’s honor. Ada is a former LLCC Natural and Agricultural Sciences faculty member who taught Anatomy and Physiology and who passed away in May 2022. The tree is located in front of the Millennium Center. All are invited to attend to honor Ada and share stories and memories. Anyone who has an “Ada’s Army” T-shirt is encouraged to wear it today.  Her family will also be present.
