There will be an increased police presence on the main campus today. The LLCC Police Department will be hosting the Springfield Police Department’s Emergency Response Team for a site assessment of campus.
With a fast-paced and technology-efficient world, law enforcement agencies have an obvious responsibility to create and maintain a social media presence. The LLCC Police Department (LLCCPD) has recently launched a Facebook page. According to Chief Russell, “Facebook is a great tool to provide a forum for people to ask questions and for the police department to share tips. Especially during COVID-19, it is important to build positive relationships and a sense of community by engaging with each other through social media.” LLCCPD can establish a credible presence on social media that opens a new door of communication with the general public. Community Service Officer Brendan Lee expressed, “Facebook can also help spread information quickly and with minimal effort which in the end could protect and benefit the college campus community.”
What can you see on the Facebook page? LLCPD will provide informational updates to utilize the opportunity to engage their community. With the use of appropriate humor, posts will be friendly and tongue-in-cheek to humanize the LLCCPD. As a result, Officer Cleo Moore states, “The success or failure of community policing hinges our LLCC Police Department’s ability to humanize both the law enforcement profession and the people we serve.”
Disclaimer: The posting of requests for police assistance, regardless if it is of an emergency or non-emergency nature, is discouraged and will not guarantee a response by the LLCCPD or any emergency service provider. In case of an emergency, or if police assistance is needed, please dial 911.
The LLCC Police Department recently began a new program in which officers are on the lookout, “catching students” doing something right! The officers are trained at observing people’s behaviors and actions and have already “caught” several students doing things such as holding doors open for others or picking up trash. They have even caught one student helping another student change a flat tire. Each student that is “caught” is given either a gift card for a free Quiznos’ sandwich or a free “I Got Caught” T-shirt.

March 1-7 is Severe Weather Preparedness Week. With severe weather season upon us here in central Illinois, the LLCC Police Department would like to remind everyone to keep the following in mind:
When a TORNADO WATCH is issued, it means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes, and you should keep an eye on the weather forecast for any changes or updates. When a TORNADO WARNING is issued, it means that a tornado has actually been spotted and/or indicated by radar in the warned area.
Locations of each building’s Severe Weather Safe Areas (SWSAs) are clearly marked on the evacuation maps posted in all classrooms and common areas on campus. These areas are highlighted in yellow on the maps. The evacuation maps are also available online (must be logged into Office 365 to view). Please take a few moments and familiarize yourself with these locations for the buildings you frequent.
If one of our locations is in the path of a severe weather event, the college will send an emergency message via the LLCC ALERT emergency notification system. This system sends messages via text and voicemail on your cell phone, voicemail on your office phone and email. If you receive an alert message, proceed to the nearest SWSA in the building you are in. If you cannot remember where the SWSA is located, go to an interior room on a lower floor of the building, away from any windows. An “all clear” message will be sent when the threat has passed. At that time, normal activities can resume.
In addition to the evacuation maps, each classroom and office should have an Emergency Quick Reference Manual (EQRM) posted. The EQRM is color-coded and contains basic information regarding actions you should take in a variety of emergency situations. It’s a good idea to take a few minutes at the start of each semester to familiarize yourself with its contents. For replacement EQRMs, please contact the LLCC Police Department, at 786-2278.
