AIeL Open Lab Happens Today

Join the staff of LLCC Academic Innovation & eLearning to talk all things teaching, pedagogy, Canvas, H5P, SoftChalk migrations, instructional design, digital accessibility and more. They will be available today from noon to 1 p.m. in person in Menard 2229, or online via Teams, to answer your questions and to support what you are doing in your classes. All faculty and staff are welcome at any of AIeL’s open labs, regardless of teaching modality or department.

 

Sunsetting SoftChalk

LLCC will not be renewing the college’s SoftChalk license after the current contract expires. The deadline to export and save any content currently stored in your SoftChalk Cloud accounts is Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024. Content that is not exported by the end of the license expiration will be lost.

Keep in mind:

  • The deadline of Aug. 15 is for exporting and saving Softchalk Cloud content.
  • The export files created are html/index files and can be loaded directly into Canvas and will function the same as they do in Softchalk Cloud. The exception to this is SoftChalk lessons that are connected to the Canvas Gradebook. These connections will be lost when the html/index files are uploaded directly into Canvas.
  • AIeL has developed both written directions and video tutorials on how to download SoftChalk lessons from the cloud and upload them in Canvas.

H5P

LLCC has now licensed new content authoring software called H5P, which offers more design flexibility and a richer feature set than SoftChalk. H5P can be used to create a wider variety of interactive content types, including quizzes, games, and simulations. H5P content is designed to be accessible to all users, which is especially important for students with disabilities. H5P is also mobile-friendly, so students can access H5P on almost any type of device.  H5P is also open source and has a large and active community of users who contribute to its development and who share different kinds of content with one another.

Please note:

  • Transitioning content from SoftChalk to H5P is not required. As described above, exported SoftChalk Cloud files (html/index files) can be loaded into Canvas courses and will look and function the same as they do when stored in SoftChalk Cloud with the exception for those lessons tied directly to the gradebook.
  • AIeL began training and support for H5P during the fall 23 semester with the intent to provide a full academic year for those who wish to transition from SoftChalk to H5P.
  • Workshops on H5P are still being offered through the spring 24 semester and can be found on the AIeL Workshop Schedule. Questions about the use of H5P can also be answered at AIeL open labs or by appointment with a member of the AIeL Team.

Today’s AIeL Workshop: Introduction to H5P

AIeL presents “Introduction to H5P” with John Freml, director of faculty development, Andy Mitkos, director of academic technology systems and Gary Bach, academic technology support specialist today from noon to 1 p.m. on Microsoft Teams.

Introduction to H5P registration

H5P is a new tool licensed by LLCC for faculty and staff that allows users to create, share and reuse interactive and engaging educational content including quizzes, games, presentations, interactive videos and images, learning paths and more. In this interactive introductory workshop, participants will learn more about this exciting tool, see a demo of how to integrate it into Canvas courses and have an opportunity to build something in H5P to share with others. Additionally, participants will see a demonstration of how SoftChalk lessons can be archived to aid in the transition to H5P. This workshop will be repeated multiple times throughout the semester and will be recorded for participants to reference as needed. An in-person AIeL Open Lab will follow each H5P workshop two days later at the same time, for anyone who desires further support.

Faculty participants will receive one point toward their Training and Innovation professional development total for successful completion of this workshop.

Educators at every level have seen and reported an increase of physical and mental abuse at their campuses at the hands of students, parents, and even other staff members. Join in a candid conversation on the research surrounding this matter and what can be done to ensure the safety of everyone on our campuses.

Help spread the word about the Student Technology Center

Student Technology CenterLast semester LLCC Academic Innovation and eLearning added a new service, the Student Technology Center. The Student Technology Center can provide help for students with technology support that is required for class assignments. The STC has been designed to support individual students who may not have strong technical skills or who may require additional support getting started with a technology-based assignment.

The STC is located next to the Canvas Support Center in the lower level of Sangamon Hall and will be available to support students from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with other times as needed. We are currently taking individual and small group walk-up support requests and appointments through the college’s student appointment system. Help us spread the word.

Today’s AIeL Workshop: Student Rapport and Motivation

AIeL presents “Student Rapport and Motivation” with Dr. Jennifer O’Malley, professor of biology, today, Jan. 29, 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Sangamon 1103.

This workshop will focus on how building relationships with students impacts motivation. The facilitator will begin by sharing several strategies they have implemented to build better rapport with their students and will discuss how these methods have impacted motivation. Participants will also have a chance to share approaches they use to build student rapport and brainstorm additional strategies to implement in the classroom.

Note: Faculty participants will receive one point toward their Training and Innovation professional development total for successful completion of this workshop.
