LLCC-Jacksonville celebrated the college’s 50th anniversary Friday, May 5 with a Chamber Business After Hours, LLCC historic display, art exhibit and presentation with speakers Craig Findley, immediate past LLCC Board of Trustees chair and current trustee; Dr. Charlotte Warren, LLCC president; and Jacksonville Mayor Andy Ezard, who presented a resolution from the city honoring the college.

Upcoming 50th anniversary observances include: LLCC-Litchfield, this evening from 5-7 p.m.; LLCC-Beardstown, Wednesday, May 17, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.; and LLCC-Taylorville, Tuesday, May 23 during an advisory committee meeting.(The original event at LLCC-Taylorville scheduled for April 29 was cancelled due to inclement weather.)

Jay Kitterman, consultant, Culinary Institute, wrote this week’s Epicuriosity 101 column in the State Journal-Register entitled, “The Joy of Tacos!”

Kevin Lust, director, Illinois Small Business Development Center at LLCC, wrote “Owners take different paths to business success” for the State Journal-Register “Our Towns” page Sunday, May 7. The essay also was included in the statewide ISBDC e-newsletter.

We extend our sympathy to Gary Albert, head women’s basketball coach, on the passing of his father, Russell Albert. Services will be held Monday, May 8, at the United Methodist Church in Chatham. Staab Polk Memorial Home in Chatham will be conducting the services at the church. Military Honor Guard will be at 9 a.m., with 9:15 visitation until the 11 a.m. services. Burial will follow at the Old Salem Cemetery.

If you ordered tomato plants from the Environmental Club, they will be available for pick up on Monday, 5/8, from 11:30 to 3:00 and Wednesday, 5/10 , from 10:00 to 1:00 and 3:00 to 4:30.   Please come to the biology department greenhouse on the second floor of Sangamon Hall.  If these times don’t work for you, please contact Becky Croteau, at becky.croteau@llcc.edu or 786-2369, to make alternative arrangements.

LLCC-Jacksonville will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the college’s founding from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The public is invited to the event which includes a Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours, a Downtown First Friday event and a special program including a proclamation presentation.

The program begins at approximately 5 p.m. with remarks by LLCC President Charlotte Warren, Ph.D. and a proclamation presentation by City of Jacksonville Mayor Andy Ezard. The Downtown First Friday event includes artwork by MarySusan Farmer and photography by Elizabeth King. An LLCC 50th anniversary exhibit also will be on display and LLCC’s new book “50 FORWARD!” and other 50th anniversary items will be available for purchase at the event.

The PRM staff would like to thank everyone who assisted with the 373 7^th graders and their teachers who visited campus on Tuesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 4. During the visit, the students were very excited and enthused to learn about many of the classes and programs at LLCC from participating staff and faculty.

After a brief welcome, the students toured the Workforce Careers Center; emergency services, surgical technology, theatre and computer areas; and learned about aviation.

Faculty and staff providing information to students included Nick Ferreira, Nancy Sweet, Julie Rourke, Bob Howard, Dave Green, Carmen Allen, Dave Pietrzak, Mark Hardiman, Casandra Troxell, Tom Spears, Darla Cochran and Jay Kitterman.

Some highlights: one student rendered aid to a “dying” mannequin in the emergency services, and another stated that he learned his grandpa has the greatest job ever. So a big shout out to Grandpa Dave Green from his grandson! They also experienced a presentation about coding with Carmen Allen, went outside to see the semi-trucks, enjoyed slushies provided by renewable energies and the HVAC program, and some really relished their Kodak moment in the automotive area in the Jaguar and Mustang!

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner visited the Illinois Small Business Development Center yesterday morning during National Small Business Week, to speak to the Sangamon CEO class. He discussed how he started and grew several businesses and gave advice to students aspiring to business success. He’s shown with LLCC Trustee Jeff Fulgenzi and President Charlotte Warren. Kevin Lust, ISBDC at LLCC director, introduced the governor.

As you may be aware, Google has reported a major phishing scheme that began attacking users yesterday afternoon.  If you receive an email saying that someone shared a document with you and you click to open the document and the screen asks for permission to access your account – DO NOT ALLOW PERMISSION!! If it were a legitimate Google doc it would not be asking you this.  This phishing scam affects Google accounts, not LLCC accounts.

Here is what to do if you already clicked on the phishing link and gave spammers third-party access to your Google account:

• Revoke access to “Google Docs” (the app will have access to contacts and drive) by following this link: https://myaccount.google.com/permissions 

The following are good security practices:

• Turn on multifactor authentication.
• Change your password.
• Report phishing attacks to Google by clicking on the top right arrow in your inbox.
• Always use caution when clicking on links sent to you and/or granting access to resources.
• Never share usernames, passwords, SSN, bank accounts, etc.
