LLCC Honors Program holding Winter Warriors Coat Drive

The LLCC Honors Program is collecting winter outerwear to share the warmth in our community! Donations can include winter coats, hats, scarves, gloves and blankets (new or gently used). The donation drive goes through Friday, Nov. 3. The collection station will be located in A. Lincoln Commons from  8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day with a drop box to place items. All donations will be distributed to the Family Violence Coalition.

“Native American Heritage Month: Literature and Conversation” Nov. 6

Native American Heritage Month posterLLCC Student Life and TRIO Student Support Services are hosting the next Soup & Stories program, “Native American Heritage Month: Literature and Conversation,” on Monday, Nov. 6 from noon-2 p.m. in the R.H. Stephens Room. Sheila Walk from the Springfield Area Arts Council will be reading an excerpt from the book, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.” She will be accompanied by David Tell playing the Native American flute.

The program is open to the LLCC community, but geared toward the development of students. If faculty and staff are interested in attending there is just a $3 charge for the lunch.

“Nexus: Drawing in Printmaking” in James S. Murray Gallery through Nov. 16

Nexus: Drawing in PrintmakingThe James S. Murray Gallery is featuring the art exhibit, “Nexus: Drawing in Printmaking,” a portfolio invitational curated by Micah Zavacky through Nov. 16. The exhibit is open for viewing Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The gallery is located on the upper level of Menard Hall.

The invitational portfolio is comprised of 19 artists that view printmaking as an extension of drawing. All prints were completed in 2016.

“A ‘nexus’ is defined as a connection or series of connections that link people, places and/or things,” explains Zavacky, MFA printmaking candidate at Illinois State University. “This portfolio is an intersection of various drawing vocabularies, printmaking processes and subject matter. The artists are innovative, yet are attuned with tradition, thoughtful and committed to the syntax of printmaking.”

Culinary-focused trip to Italy

Culinary trip to ItalyToday, Nov. 1, is the deadline to make the deposit that secures plane ticket costs for the two-week culinary-focused trip to Italy May 27-June 10, 2018. LLCC Culinary Arts is planning this trip, which is open to students and the community. In conjunction with Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy, participants will travel to three areas: the Marche region, nestled between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea; the food valley area of Modena and Parma, located in the Emilia-Romagna region and known for prosciutto, balsamic vinegar and Parmesan cheese; and finally the city of Rome, the capital of Italy.

While there, various classes will be held in Italian language, culture and culinary heritage and tradition of Italy. This culinary immersion will also include meeting with culinary experts, local wine and food producers, restaurant owners and culinary entrepreneurs. Excursions to destinations with high artistic interest and natural beauty around Italy will provide a well-rounded perspective of Italian life and culture.

Phishing is a common identity theft method used by fraudulent parties. NEVER send your personal information including passwords, user IDs, credit card numbers or a Social Security Number via email. Passwords should NEVER be shared with ANYONE in any form.

LLCC Recital Series to feature LLCC Choir in concert Nov. 1

Love and All That Jazz posterThe LLCC Choir will perform today at 12:15 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons as part of the LLCC Recital Series. The recital is entitled “Love and All That Jazz” and will feature jazz, pop and holiday selections. The LLCC Choir is under the direction of See Tsai Chan.

All LLCC Recital Series performances are free and open to the public. Upcoming recitals include:

Soup & Stories: They Call Me Q Nov. 1

LLCC Student Life and TRIO present the Soup & Stories program, “They Call Me Q,” written and performed by Qurrat Ann Kadwani. The program will be held today from 1-3 p.m. in the R.H. Stephens room.

They Call Me Q“They Call Me Q” is a story of a girl from Bombay growing up in the Boogie Down Bronx who gracefully seeks balance between cultural pressures brought forth by her traditional parents and wanting acceptance into her new culture.

Join us for this amazing presentation that speaks to the universal search for identity experienced by immigrants of all nationalities.
