Domestic Violence Awareness Month Week of Action events

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month Week of Action is Oct. 16-20. SAVE Taskforce will have programming throughout the week and would love your participation! All events will be held in A. Lincoln Commons. Throughout the week, we encourage everyone to post about their participation in DVAM Week of Action events with the hashtag #TakeAStand.

Monday, Oct. 16 – Pledge Day, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
As members of the LLCC community, pledge to use your education, experiences and voices to speak out against intimate partner violence. Sign the pledge and post on social media about why you took the pledge or the steps you will take to live up to your pledge. Remember, use #TakeAStand to be a part of the national conversation on ending domestic violence!

Tuesday, Oct. 17 – Take a Stand Tuesday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
In correlation with the National Week of Action theme, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to sign up to take a stand against domestic and intimate partner violence — literally! Symbolic of our refusal to be passive bystanders of intimate partner violence in our community, we will have at least one person “taking a stand” in A. Lincoln Commons from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Participants can sign up for a time slot that fits your schedule here. We will have conversation tips and signs available for all participants. Share a message of your commitment to taking a stand against domestic violence using #TakeAStand.

Wednesday, Oct.18 – Silent Witness, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Sojourn Shelter and Services will be on campus with their Silent Witness exhibit. This exhibit both honors victims and uses their stories to convey the tragic reality of domestic violence (more information here: http://www.silentwitness.net). There will be representatives from Sojourn present to hand out information.

Thursday, Oct. 19 – Purple Thursday, “Talk About It Thursday,” 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Wear your purple and bring your $5 to the LLCC Student Life Office to participate in the Feminist Activist Coalition’s Jeans Day benefiting Sojourn Shelter and Services, a local domestic violence resource center. This year, we will also be handing out purple ribbons attached to a small sheet with tips for having an informed conversation about domestic violence. Recipients of the purple ribbons will be encouraged to talk to at least one person using their conversation tip.

In the news

The LLCC bird banding station is the subject of an article in the latest edition of Meadowlark: A Journal of Illinois Birds, a publication of the Illinois Ornithological Society. Tony Rothering, professor of biology, is mentioned in the article, which includes photos of him, students and volunteers at the bird banding station.

LLCC’s dual credit classes were the subject of an Oct. 11 story in the Taylorville Breeze-Courier. Taylorville High School and LLCC have collaborated to bring college course offerings to high school juniors. There are 68 THS students enrolled in LLCC classes, which is more than double the number compared to last year.

Register for Wellness Screening and Flu Shot Clinic

LLCC will be offering an onsite Wellness Screening and Flu Shot Clinic next week on Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 7 a.m.-11:30 a.m. in the Trutter Center. This event is open to all LLCC benefit-eligible employees and their spouses. For those employees and their spouses who are enrolled in a LLCC health insurance plan, the wellness screening and flu shot is free! All benefit-eligible employees who participate in the wellness screening will receive a $50 Visa gift card – just for participating!

To register for the onsite wellness screening and/or flu shot, open the 2017 ONSITE Screening Guide for login/registration instructions.  Please note that there is a separate registration for the wellness screening and the flu shot.  If you would like to do both, please be sure to register for both.

Not available on Oct. 17? Register for a “Remote” screening using the 2017 Physician Screening Guide directions. The guide includes a form that you can take to your primary care physician to conduct the same bio-metric screening. If you have the physician conduct the screening and fax the results to CHCWellbeing by Oct. 31, benefit-eligible employees will also receive the $50 Visa gift card incentive for participating remotely!

Two LLCC students receive national scholarships

LLCC agriculture major Edra “Emmi” Fisher of Springfield is among 20 students nationally awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the 2017-18 National Black Farmers Association Scholarship Program. This is the third time she has won a scholarship from the organization, designed to assist students in pursuing studies in agriculture.

Emmi is passionate about organic farming. She has worked on farms through Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF) in various parts of the country during the past two summers, bringing back information and ideas to the LLCC garden while helping to grow a wide variety of vegetables for the college culinary programs and campus farm stand. She has also written LLCC’s “Epicuriosity 101” weekly culinary column in the State Journal-Register three times, covering topics such as healthy eating, her organic farming experience and fair trade coffee. Mason Gordon of Springfield, an agriculture business major at Lincoln Land Community College, is one of 10 students nationwide selected to receive the 2017 Pearson Scholarship for Higher Education, a $5,000 award. The scholarship is awarded to Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society members who are civically engaged in their community through service and who demonstrate leadership, academic rigor and excellence. Preference is given to first-generation college students. Nearly 700 applications were received.

Mason, originally from Rushville, Indiana, is active with LLCC’s award-winning Livestock Judging and Model Illinois Government (MIG) teams. He was honored as Outstanding Committee Chair in the House of Representations at last year’s MIG simulation. Read more.
