BSU and PTK collecting coats for kids

The LLCC Black Student Union and Phi Theta Kappa are partnering up with Eastside Pride and Green Family Stores to collect coats for kids in the community.

BSU and PTK members will accept coat donations in A. Lincoln Commons from noon to 2 p.m. on Oct. 20 and Nov. 3.

Coats can also be dropped off with one of the BSU advisors (Kim Wilson, Lisa Clanton and Brandon Lewis) or PTK advisors (Dr. Gillian Bauer).

Every child should have a warm coat, and you can help!

BSU hosting bake sale today, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The LLCC Black Student Union is excited to announce the establishment of a new scholarship through the LLCC Foundation! Each year one student will be awarded $250 to help with tuition, fees and books. To raise money for the scholarship, BSU members will host monthly bake sales in A. Lincoln Commons. Join them for the first one on Friday, Sept.29, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The other bake sale dates this semester are Oct. 30 and Nov. 20.

BSU event for first-time students

LLCC’s Black Student Union sponsored a meet-and-greet with current club members and advisors Brandon Lewis and Kim Wilson. First-time students were able to purchase their books, find their classes, obtain their student IDs and answer any questions about college with help of BSU club officers. Many thanks to Shelly Smothers, the LLCC Bookstore and Student Life for their assistance. There were 27 first time students who attended the event.

The documentary shares the story of Tracey Meares being denied the title of class valedictorian because of her race even though she held the highest grade point average at Springfield High School in 1984. LLCC faculty, staff and students are invited to watch this 50-minute documentary and join in the discussion led by Dr. Nicki Florence and Maria Ansely.
