Help students purchase career wear at the Suit-Up Event

LLCC faculty and staff can help students purchase career wear at the JCPenney Suit-Up Event!

Make a donation for the purchase of JCPenney gift cards that will be awarded to students the week of Oct. 21, in time to use at the event on Oct. 25.

To participate, please submit your donation along with this completed form through inter-office mail to Cathy Huffman or Marina Wirsing in LLCC Career Services by Oct. 15. Make checks payable to LLCC Foundation and write Suit-Up Event in the memo line. Thank you for your generosity!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

During the month of October, this nationally recognized observance draws attention to this insidious epidemic. Please consider attending an event or participating in an activity during awareness/education events at LLCC.

“Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone. Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or who are dating. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.” (www.ndvh.org)

Domestic violence is a community issue; it is not “just a family problem.” Statistics indicate that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes (www.ndvh.org). During the month of October, national hotlines, domestic violence service providers, state and local governments as well as colleges remind us of this epidemic that cuts across racial, socioeconomic and educational lines. DV is 100% the fault and choice of the abuser; it is not the victim’s fault and victims are not alone. If you or someone you know needs help for domestic violence please use the following numbers:

“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” photo

LLCC Compliance and Prevention is seeking members of the campus community who identify as male to show their support for sexual assault prevention by appearing in a group photo! The photo will be featured in the Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault’s annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” calendar. The calendar highlights groups of men from organizations in the Springfield community and connects to PCASA’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” campaign. The calendar is used as a tool for increasing awareness as well as raising funds for supplies. Members of the group photo will be asked to put on red heels to connect to the theme. Anyone interested in participating in the photo should come to A. Lincoln Commons at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15. JCPenney Suit-Up Event Information Session today

You'll Find More Than Suits at the JCPenney Suit-Up Event. Business Casual. Lincoln Land Community CollegeLLCC Career Services is hosting a Suit-Up Information Session, Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 3:30-4 p.m. in the Robert H. Stephens Room to:

  • Provide details for the Suit-Up Event
  • Present turn-key options to help you reach out and engage your students
  • Provide access to electronic and printed materials
  • Answer questions

Faculty and staff are invited to donate money to the Suit-up Fund in Foundation that will be used to purchase JCPenney gift cards for students who enter a drawing at the event.

For faculty advisors who cannot attend the information session, please share these details with your club officers to attend the information session.

In partnership with the local store, LLCC Career Services will be hosting this event to provide sharp discounts for students on a variety of career and work-ready clothing, essentials and accessories. Student-focused activities with giveaways, social media fun and more will take place 2-5 p.m. Simple ways for you to help engage your students in this upcoming event will be announced soon. More details to come!

September is Suicide Awareness Month

September is the time that community agencies, colleges and universities, and hotlines provide a concerted effort to increase awareness about suicide and suicide prevention (https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/promote-national-suicide-prevention-month).

The LLCC Office of Student Success encourages you to learn more about suicide and suicide prevention by participating in events in September (such as walks or runs to raise awareness), sharing information with your students or having someone come to your class to discuss suicide and suicide prevention.

We offer short-term, crisis intervention and confidential counseling services to currently enrolled students, free of charge. If you have a student in immediate crisis, please call our Counselor Line at 786-9660 (for faculty and staff use only) during the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. If it is after 5 p.m. or the weekend, please call the LLCC Police Department at 786-2222. Please note the Counselor Line is for immediate crisis only and not for issues related to classroom management or behavior; if that is the concern, please contact Leslie Johnson, AVP of Student Success.

Student training notifications

Two types of online training notifications have recently been sent to students:

  1. At the beginning of this semester, all enrolled students received an invitation from our online training provider giving them the opportunity to participate in two online trainings: AlcoholEdu and Sexual Assault Prevention for Community Colleges. These student trainings are NOT mandatory, but are highly encouraged for all students.
  2. Students who are employed at the college may also receive an invitation for online trainings, which are mandatory based on their employment status.

The student and employee trainings appear on the same platform, but only HR-issued trainings are mandatory. Please note that all training invitation emails will indicate whether the training is mandatory or optional. Questions about the optional online trainings or requests for more information can be directed to Shelby Bedford at shelby.bedford@llcc.edu.

Information about service animals on campus

LLCC Board Policy 1.26 allows service animals on campus. Service animals are trained to perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability in accordance with federal legislative mandates. It is important to never distract a service animal from their job by interacting with them. Remember that a disability may or may not be visible. LLCC may not insist on documentation or proof of state certification before allowing the service animal to accompany the person with a disability. In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a service animal, staff may ask only two specific questions:

  1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
  2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

Students with a service animal are encouraged (not required) to contact LLCC Accessibility Services. Questions or concerns about a service animal on campus can be directed to Kim Eddings at kim.eddings@llcc.edu.

Compliance and Prevention Office information and resources for a welcoming environment

LLCC is committed to providing a welcoming environment for all members of our campus community. As we begin a new academic year, the Office of Compliance and Prevention encourages all staff and faculty to review the following information and resources:

When meeting new people and working with new students,  allow individuals the opportunity to self-identify their name and pronouns. Using gender neutral pronouns (they, them, their) or someone’s chosen name in place of assigning pronouns based on your assumptions can prevent harmful situations of misgendering or “outing” a student. Remember that a student’s chosen name is used on WebAdvisor class rosters, and that it can be found within the “Pref Name” field in NAE in Colleague. LLCC respects the identities of all individuals. Student Services open extended hours

LLCC Admission, Records and Registration, Financial Aid, Placement and Testing and Student Success (formerly Advising, Counseling and Career Services) will be open extended hours to assist students with fall enrollment on these dates/times:

  • Monday-Thursday, Aug. 12-15, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday, Aug. 16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 17, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Monday-Thursday, Aug. 19-22, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday, Aug. 23, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
