LLCC education students recently participated a capstone meeting for the academic year. While networking and enjoying pizza, the students received information on transferring with their associate degree, new state requirements for educators and changes in the teacher education field.

As part of LLCC’s Education 220: Diversity of Schools and Society class, taught by Dr. Taiebeh Hosseinali, students were assigned to design and implement a community engagement project in which they could help make a difference in our community. One of the teams chose to collect and disseminate hygiene supplies and serve a meal to those who visit St. John’s Breadline. To achieve their goals, students reached out to friends, family and members of their church and community, and then gathered and organized their collection. On Sunday, April 28, the team delivered and disseminated boxes of hygiene products at the Breadline. They also spent their morning and part of their afternoon to help out prepping and serving a warm meal to participants.

The criminal justice K-9 demonstration planned for today at noon has been cancelled.

Tara Walk, associate professor of criminal justice, has scheduled a police K-9 demonstration Monday, April 22 from noon to 12:50 p.m. on the front lawn of Menard Hall. Employees and classes are welcome to view the demonstration. Please note that the demonstration will be cancelled if the officers conducting the demonstration are called to emergency situations.

LLCC is hosting its 17th annual Education Career Day for students today, Feb. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon in A. Lincoln Commons. Students interested in education as a career are encouraged to attend the event, which provides participants the opportunity to obtain in-depth information about transferring with their associate degrees to earn bachelor’s degrees in education from various four-year institutions.

LLCC Social Sciences will host a Constitution Day presentation entitled “The Constitution and Democracy: A Discussion” today from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Trutter Center on the LLCC-Springfield campus. The speaker will be LLCC Professor of Political Science Chris McDonald, Ph.D.

LLCC students from Dr. Taiebeh Hosseinali’s Diversity of School and Society class recently completed their community outreach/make a difference project, “Kicking It for YMCA.” The students collected outdoor play items for the YMCA summer camp and after school sites.

Students designed the project and were responsible for marketing and placing collection boxes at Rochester First Baptist, Silverleaf Children’s Academy in Rochester, Bank and Trust Company in Rochester and Hampton’s Inn. They collected sidewalk chalk, bubbles, Frisbees, balls and jump ropes. In addition, they raised over $200 in cash that they used to purchase a volleyball and badminton net and an assortment of outdoor play equipment.

The criminal justice K-9 demonstration originally scheduled to take place last week will now be held today, May 2. It will take place in the grassy area in front of Menard Hall at approximately 12:30 p.m. LLCC community members are welcome to watch the demonstration.
