Dr. Mark Roehrs, professor of history, was a featured speaker on Sept. 11 for the Daughters of 1812 in conjunction with the Pike County All Wars Museum. He provided a presentation on the war in the Pacific during WWII.

Co-founder of Hellowater speaks to Intro to Business class
Students in Introduction to Business taught by Christie Hovey, professor of business, heard from Rusty Jones, co-founder of Hellowater, on Tuesday. He shared his experience starting a company and the challenges and successes along the way.
Welcome Marlena Constant
Marlena Constant began Aug. 1 as LLCC’s early childhood education advocate. She has been an adjunct instructor at the college for three years. She previously worked at the Community Child Care Connection and various early childhood care facilities in Springfield and surrounding areas. LLCC welcomes new vice president and two deans
LLCC welcomed a new vice president and two new deans this summer.
Kelli Sinclair joined LLCC Aug. 1 as vice president of student services. “Kelli has more than 20 years of proven leadership experience in community college student affairs and enrollment management.” said Charlotte Warren, Ph.D., president of LLCC. “We welcome her expertise, enthusiasm and commitment to student success.”
Sinclair previously served as executive dean for student success and retention at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Ill. Earlier, she served as associate dean of enrollment management at Elgin Community College and associate/interim director of university admissions at Aurora University. She is a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission and has taught college classes in disability studies, College 101 and psychology. Sinclair holds a master’s degree in counseling with a higher education emphasis and bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northern Illinois University.
Also new at LLCC are Dr. Kalith Smith, dean of social sciences and business, and Brent Todd, dean of natural and agricultural sciences.
“We are pleased that Dr. Kalith Smith and Brent Todd have joined LLCC. They are both champions for helping students discover their potential and prepare for their future,” said Dr. Vern Lindquist, vice president of academic services.
Dr. Smith previously worked at the New Mexico Military Institute for 16 years, most recently as the associate dean of student success. He earned a doctoral degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a guidance certificate from New Mexico State, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Texas Tech.
Todd most recently served as dean of instruction at Lincoln Trail College for five years. Prior to that, he was a faculty member at Eastern Illinois University, teaching biological sciences and botany, and also worked at SIU School of Medicine and Lake Land College. He is pursuing a doctoral degree in public administration from University of Illinois Springfield and holds a master’s degree in biological sciences, a bachelor’s degree in botany from EIU and an associate degree from Danville Area Community College.

Welcome Crystal Norris
Crystal Norris joined the college in June as administrative assistant to the dean, social sciences and business. She previously worked as a paralegal for four years at Kerley & Talken, P.C. and for 12 years at Londrigen Potter Randle, P.C. She earned an associate degree from Robert Morris University. LLCC students participate in “Shark Tank” project
Introduction to Business students participated in the “Shark Tank” project last week. Local business leaders critiqued students’ pitches for creative new products and offered real-world advice on their business proposals. Proposed products included a sensory bracelet called “Twiddle Fiddles” as well as baseball/softball cleats and shoes called “Switches.”
Members of the panel and sharks were Mike Murphy, president and CEO, The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce; Drew Kinney, assistant team lead/realtor, Kathy Garst Sales Team – The Real Estate Group; Todd Weir, assistant vice president, lending, INB, N.A.; and Brian and Adrienne Murphy, president and secretary/treasurer with Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home.

Recording of roundtable discussion on the Ukraine crisis available
A roundtable discussion on the Ukraine crisis was held yesterday, March 2, at 2 p.m. in the Trutter Center and via Zoom. More than 65 people attended the session in person, and there were an additional 35 Zoom logins.
Presenters were Chris McDonald, Ph.D., professor of political science; Matt Schownir, Ph.D., assistant professor of history; and Samuel Barbour, instructor of economics. They offered an explanation of the situation in Ukraine from their perspectives along with political and historical background and analysis. An open discussion period followed.
