The James S. Murray Gallery, located on the second floor of Menard Hall, is featuring “The Living Tributary,” a ceramic art exhibit by Kyle Kirkpatrick, until July 27. Campus and community members are invited to view the work, read the artist’s statement presented in the form of a riddle-like poem and try to solve the riddle. A closing reception with the artist will be held Wednesday, July 26 from noon-1:30 p.m. at the gallery.

Kirkpatrick studied ceramics under LLCC’s Michelle Coakes and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from SIU Edwardsville. He continues to study and practice where he can, including some additional time at LLCC.

The KUDOS awards are an informal way to recognize the special contributions — small and large — made by faculty and staff that create the positive environment that is LLCC. Brighten someone’s day. Say, “Thank you! Great job!” by nominating that person for a KUDOS award.

As part of regular maintenance of life safety systems, Facilities Services started conducting inspections of all college fire sprinkler systems on Monday, July 17. Testing continues on Tuesday, July 18. While it will be necessary to periodically sound the fire alarm during these tests, we will strive to keep disruptions to a minimum. Your patience and cooperation is greatly appreciated.

In cooperation with the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, LLCC biology students participate in the capture, banding and release of birds, recording information which is added to a massive data pool on bird migration patterns. Highlights from the spring 2017 bird banding season include:

• We banded 1,106 birds of 76 species over 50 banding days.
• We averaged 22.1 birds banded per day.
• The five most abundant species by number banded were: dark-eyed junco, swamp sparrow, white-throated sparrow, yellow-rumped warbler and gray catbird.
• Our 10-season total stands at approximately 16,100 birds of 118 species (no new species were added this spring).
• There were 123 birds that had been banded in a previous season (“returns”) that were captured.
• One of these returns was a northern cardinal that was banded in the fall of 2012, which would make this bird at least 5 years old!

If your time allows, stop by the banding station this fall! Fall bird banding season begins Aug. 21 and will be in operation Monday-Saturday from sunrise to approximately 11 a.m. The station is located north of the LLCC softball and baseball fields.

Jeff Owen has joined LLCC as an aviation mechanics training specialist. He is a 2011 graduate of the LLCC aviation mechanics program and earned a bachelor’s in aviation from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has previously taught part-time in LLCC’s aviation mechanics program.

If you are interested in joining the fun by serving on the LEAGUE committee to help plan the annual faculty and staff giving campaign, we would love to hear from you! The committee meets once a month and serves for two years. We ask the following of its members:

• Attend the one-hour monthly committee meetings (Oct.–Mar.).
• Help the day of the kickoff luncheon on Tuesday, Mar. 29, 2018.
• Make a contribution to the LEAGUE campaign.  The amount is entirely up to you.  It can be $1 per pay period.

The LLCC Fitness center will be closed for renovation during the summer/fall 2017 intersession, July 31-Aug. 20.

Beginning Aug. 21, it will be open to registered employees on weekdays from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., with the following exceptions:

• Mon. and Wed. — Closed 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
• Tue. and Thu. — Closed 9-10 a.m. and 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Employees are advised that the athletic department makes significant use of the fitness center during the afternoon hours.
