Fire alarm testing in Workforce Careers Center tomorrow

LLCC Facilities Services will be coordinating testing of the fire alarm system at the Workforce Careers Center on Friday, Oct. 27.  While we strive to keep disruptions to a minimum, it will be necessary to occasionally activate the strobes as well as the audio system.

Your patience is appreciated as we perform this necessary testing.

LLCC to host Workforce 101 Nov. 11

LLCC will host Workforce 101 from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 11 to allow individuals to try out various career training programs. Registration for the free event is available at www.llcc.edu/workforce.

Hands-on workforce sessions will be offered in construction, automotive technology, HVAC, commercial electrical maintenance, and hospitality and culinary arts.

The event begins at the Workforce Careers Center on the LLCC campus, 5250 Shepherd Road. Doors open at 9:45 a.m. From 10-11:15 a.m., participants will attend their chosen workforce session. From 11:30 a.m. to noon, participants can learn about steps to enroll, ways to pay for college and support services, such as the Workforce Equity Initiative and services for veterans.

“We invite prospective students to learn about these in-demand industries and career opportunities, and how our programs can get you into a high paying career quickly,” said Dr. Nancy Sweet, dean of the LLCC Workforce Institute. “This event is unique in that participants can actually roll up their sleeves and do hands-on activities in our labs.”

Submit Veterans Day recognition form

United States flagsThe college will honor veterans at its 28th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony, sponsored by LLCC Student Life. The ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10 in A. Lincoln Commons with a reception to follow. This event honors all veterans, including LLCC faculty, staff and students who served in the armed forces, and it is open to the public. 

We look forward to honoring those who have served our country. To be included in the printed program, please complete this Veterans Day Recognition Form no later than Oct. 31.

MC3 Youth Build and LLCC construction students learn about renovation project

MC3 Youth Build and LLCC Construction Occupations students had opportunities this fall to check in with Tim Ervin, director, construction and environmental, health and safety, construction management, on updates to the Menard Hall Student Services renovation project. Throughout the semester, students from both programs have been meeting with Tim to learn and get an in-person view of the project’s progress.

BSU hosting bake sale Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The LLCC Black Student Union is establishing a new scholarship through the LLCC Foundation! Each year one student will be awarded $250 to help with tuition, fees and books. To raise money for the scholarship, BSU members are hosting monthly bake sales in A. Lincoln Commons. Join them for the second one on Monday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The remaining bake sale date this semester is Nov. 20.

Presentation by Ambassador Charles Ray today, 10 a.m.

Ambassador (Ret.) Charles Ray“The Future of U.S. Diplomacy,” a presentation by Ambassador (Ret.) Charles Ray, will be held today, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Trutter Center. Ambassador Ray will discuss the landmark actionable report, “Blueprints for a More Modern U.S. Diplomatic Service,” which provides recommendations on how the U.S. organizes and executes its diplomacy.

The campus community and public are invited to attend. This is an opportunity to have your voice heard and provide your thoughts on the recommendations in the report.

During his 30-year career as a Foreign Service Officer, Ambassador Ray was posted to China, Thailand, Sierra Leone and Vietnam. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia and to Zimbabwe.

The presentation is sponsored by LLCC and the World Affairs Council of Central Illinois.

The ambassador will also meet with the Honors Program Leadership Class taught by Dr. Chris McDonald from 9-10 that morning in the Trutter Center.

Silent Witness display, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., visit the Silent Witness display hosted by Sojourn Shelters & Services Inc. in A. Lincoln Commons. This powerful display honors those whose lives ended prematurely due to domestic violence.

Sojourn Shelter Services & Inc. provides more than shelter to those who are experiencing domestic violence. They also provide a 24-hour hotline, one-on-one and group counseling for those impacted by domestic violence as well as court advocacy. They need donations of shampoo, conditioner, soap, dental products and razors for those staying in their shelter. Donations can be dropped off in LLCC Student Life, Student Success or any Outreach Center.
