In the news

The April 12 community service project that LLCC education students in the Diversity of Schools and Society class taught by Dr. Taiebeh Hosseinali, professor of education, was featured on the front page of The Journal-News. The project included planting flowers and reading books about gardens at the Hillsboro Community Child Development Center.

Tony Rothering, professor of biology and coordinator of the LLCC bird banding station, spoke on that topic at a meeting of the Elkhart Historical Society April 12. A story about his presentation appeared in the New Herald News.

Police K-9 demonstration Monday

Lincoln Land Community College Criminal Justice ProgramTara Walk, associate professor of criminal justice, has scheduled a police K-9 demonstration Monday, April 22 from noon to 12:50 p.m. on the front lawn of Menard Hall. Employees and classes are welcome to view the demonstration. Please note that the demonstration will be cancelled if the officers conducting the demonstration are called to emergency situations.

Donate by April 23 to coat drive for LLCC students

This past winter our LLCC community noticed many students wearing light coats that did not provide the best protection for the intense cold we experienced. That is why the LLCC Student Government Association, TRIO and the Student Success team are working together to make sure any LLCC student who needs a warm winter coat will have one next winter.

Take a minute to watch SGA explain a bit more about how you can help make a difference! (Please note that the video plays best when using Chrome or Firefox as your browser.)

As you are doing your spring cleaning this year, if you find a gently used adult or child winter coat(s) you no longer are going to use, please donate it to our coat drive. Any size coat will be appreciated because, as you may know, many our students have little ones at home that also need a warm coat next winter. We welcome all new or gently used coats and ask that, if possible, you wash and dry donations on high heat before bringing them to campus.

Drop off locations can be found in LLCC Student Life, outside the TRIO area and in the Workforce Careers Center. The coat drive continues through Tuesday, April 23. The coat giveaway event will be held during the fall semester in November. Thank you for helping to make next winter a more enjoyable experience for many of our students.

Tickets for Farmer’s Share Lunch on April 24

The LLCC Agriculture Club is hosting its Eighth Annual Farmer’s Share Lunch on Wednesday, April 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Trutter Center. The club is selling tickets for the meal that will include a pork barbecue or steakburger sandwich, green beans, potato salad, cookies, and tea or lemonade for 50 cents. The cost represents the portion of the meal’s cost that actually goes back to the farmers who grew the food. The rest of the cost is for processing, marketing, transportation, etc. Only 100 tickets are available, and they may be purchased from any LLCC Ag Club member or by contacting club advisor Bill Harmon at 786-2573 or bill.harmon@llcc.edu.

During the event, guests will also be able to test their agriculture knowledge with trivia questions and win prizes. The event is open to anyone in the campus community as an educational activity for the club.

Severe weather reminders from LLCCPD

The LLCC Police Department would like to remind everyone that severe weather season is upon us here in central Illinois.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • When a TORNADO WATCH is issued, it means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes, and you should keep an eye on the weather forecast for any changes or updates. When a TORNADO WARNING is issued, it means that a tornado has actually been spotted and/or indicated by radar in the warned area.
  • Locations of each building’s Severe Weather Safe Areas (SWSA) are clearly marked on the evacuation maps posted in all classrooms and common areas on campus. These areas are highlighted in yellow on the maps. Please take a few moments and familiarize yourself with these locations for the buildings you frequent.
  • If one of our locations is in the path of a severe weather event, the college will send an emergency message via the LLCC ALERT emergency notification system. This system sends messages via text and voicemail on your cell phone, voicemail on your office phone and email. If you receive an alert message, proceed to the nearest SWSA in the building you are in. If you cannot remember where the SWSA is located, go to an interior room on a lower floor of the building, away from any windows. An “all clear” message will be sent when the threat has passed. At that time, normal activities can resume.

In addition to the evacuation maps, each classroom and office should have an Emergency Quick Reference Manual (EQRM) posted. The EQRM is color-coded, and contains basic information regarding actions you should take in a variety of emergency situations. It is a good idea to take a few minutes each semester to familiarize yourself with its contents. For replacement EQRMs, please contact the LLCC Police Department, at 786-2278.
