African-American History Month

Celebrate African-American History Month. Vistion 2020: Elevate, Accentuate, Illuminate Your Future. Click for information about events through the month of February.LLCC is celebrating African-American History Month during February with various events. The theme for this year’s observance is “Vision 2020: Elevate, Accentuate, Illuminate Your Future.”

Activities continue today with “Embracing Diversity and Understanding Our Differences,” a panel discussion/open forum, 9-11 a.m. in A. Lincoln Commons. The event is co-sponsored by the LLCC African-American History Month Committee and LLCC Student Life.

LLCC hosted regional Academic Challenge

High school students at Academic ChallengeApproximately 280 students from 18 area high schools competed in the 24th annual regional Academic Challenge on Tuesday at LLCC. Students competed as individuals and as teams (of up to 14 students) testing in their choice of two of these subjects — biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics.

Katie Nix and Dr. Vern LindquistDuring registration and lunch, LLCC hosted exhibits for students to learn about opportunities at the college. Also, thanks to support from the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE), a $200 LLCC Foundation scholarship was awarded at the event.

Dr. Vern Lindquist presented at the Academic Challenge, and Bill Bade served as emcee. The event was organized by LLCC Mathematics and Computer Science faculty Lucinda Caughey and Matt Vespa. Amy Williams and Carrie Henry coordinated the catering.

Nominations for Pearson Master Teacher due Feb. 7

The LLCC Foundation invites students, faculty, staff, alumni and retirees to nominate an outstanding full-time, tenured faculty member for the 2020 Drs. Raymond and Ann Pearson Master Teacher Award. This award annually recognizes an exceptional faculty member’s professional contributions to LLCC. A faculty member may receive the award one time only.

Online nominations are currently open. LLCC students, faculty and staff may also log in to Blackboard to access the nomination form. Nominations must be submitted by Friday, Feb. 7, 2020.

New grant development process

Need a grant for a project? Follow the new LLCC grant development process!

LLCC New Grant Development Process 2020 version. Start then go to Dept Concept 1 pg paper, in which grant form is completed with required Dept and VP signatures. Then go to Submit Paper and Grant Form (Concept paper and grant form submitted to Director of Grant Dev, Exec Dir of Foundation and Fiscal Office. They will score the proposal with Go/No Go Scorecard. Then Proposal Scored. Then President Decision. If yes, the Application Preparation Begins with the Director of Grant Dev working with Dept Expertise to prepare the Grant application. If no, the Dept revisits proposal.Michelle Pulce-Flynn was recently hired as the director of grant development to pursue new grant opportunities for the college and to centralize and formalize a grant application process. To assist departments in meeting strategic priorities, please review the documents – including an overview, process map, request form and scorecard – on the Grant Development Process SharePoint site.

Lincoln’s birthday events at LLCC

The Illinois Freedom Project Exhibit. Feb. 11-13, A. Lincoln Commons, Springfield Campus. A multimedia initiative that teaches about the journey from slavery to freedom in Illinois. LLCC Outreach Centers will host Lincoln-themed activities during the week of Feb. 10.
In observance of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, LLCC will host the Illinois Freedom Project travelling exhibit from Feb. 11-13 in A. Lincoln Commons.

The Illinois Freedom Project is a multimedia initiative that teaches about the journey from slavery to freedom in Illinois. A website, videos, printed materials, curriculum and a traveling exhibit share the stories of freedom through the lens of the people, places and events in Illinois history. The exhibit is travelling to Looking for Lincoln communities throughout the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area through 2020.

On Feb. 12, Lincoln Home interpretive staff will also be on campus talking about Lincoln and his time in Springfield, and there will be opportunities to take a photo with a Lincoln reenactor from 8-9:30 a.m.

In addition, LLCC Outreach Centers will host Lincoln-themed activities during the week of Feb. 10.

On Feb. 12, noon to 2 p.m., LLCC-Litchfield will host an exhibit of Lincoln artifacts from the Historical Society of Montgomery County, and author Carol Alexander will be on hand at LLCC-Taylorville to share local Lincoln stories. LLCC-Jacksonville will hold a presentation from noon to 12:30 p.m. on Lincoln’s impact in Morgan County.

Throughout the week, LLCC-Beardstown will feature showings of the movie “Lincoln” and personally guided tours of the Old Lincoln Courtroom and Museum.

Information on local Lincoln historic attractions will be available at all locations.

Bistro Verde open today, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Open for lunch: Bistro Verde in the Workforce Careers Center. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 4-March 5 and March 26-April 23. Food prepared and served by LLCC culinary and hospitality students in a full-service, sit-down cafe. Reservations strongly encouraged, 217-786-2821.
Bistro Verde, located in the Workforce Careers Center, is open today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a full-service dining experience. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made by emailing bistroverde@llcc.edu, calling 786-2821 or stopping by the café during hours of business. Cash and debit or credit cards are accepted.

In the LLCC Culinary Arts program, part of a student’s learning experience is to run an actual working café that is open to the public. Hospitality degree-seeking students manage the dining room, while culinary arts students prepare all the orders. Baking and pastry students provide breads and desserts. Students gain practical hands-on experience and learn about providing diners with high quality food and service to create a memorable dining occasion.

Bistro Verde is open during the spring 2020 semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Thursday, March 5 and again from  Thursday, March 26 through Thursday, April 23.
