ALL hosting fall kickoff Sept. 17 and chilli supper Oct. 3
The LLCC Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) invites the public to two upcoming events: the fall kickoff and chilli supper.
The fall kickoff will be held Friday, Sept. 17, 1-3 p.m. in LLCC’s student union, located in the lower level of Menard Hall on the LLCC campus, 5250 Shepherd Road. With the theme “Where in the United States is ALL?” attendees will “travel” throughout the U.S. as they navigate exhibits. The event includes snacks and beverages, games and a commemorative tree planting celebrating the culmination of ALL’s Big Read project. Guests are welcome to attend, ask questions and join ALL. The annual ALL chilli supper will be held Sunday, Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Temple B’rith Sholom Social Hall, 1004 S. 4th St. Cost is $8 per person and free for youth ages 8 and under. The event will feature chilli made by Les Eastep, well-known Springfield chilli chef and cook-off judge. Also on the menu are hot dogs, chilli dogs, beverages and desserts, with carryout available.
The LLCC Academy of Lifelong Learning is a membership group of adults 50 and greater devoted to the lifelong pursuit of learning. With 10 to 12 opportunities available each month, the Academy provides enjoyable experiences in learning with a variety of opportunities to develop new friendships.

Got art? Join the LLCC “On My Own Time” exhibit this fall
LLCC is participating in the Springfield Area Arts Council’s On My Own Time (OMOT) program, providing LLCC faculty and staff the opportunity to display original art created outside the office. Faculty and staff may enter up to three works of art each. Works previously entered in OMOT or created prior to 2020 are not eligible. The artist fee is $5 per artwork submitted. The fee assists SAAC with costs of the OMOT program.

Artwork entry, identification forms and fees will need to be submitted by Thursday, Sept. 30 to one of the LLCC coordinators (Misty or Lindee). Artwork is due to the LLCC coordinators by Wed., Oct. 6.

- Fiber/Fabric/Quilts/ Needlework

- Pottery/Ceramics

LLCC’s in-house exhibit will be featured on the LLCC-Springfield campus Oct. 12-28. Those who visit the exhibit can vote for their favorite piece. The artist who created it will win the LLCC People’s Choice Award and receive a $100 Visa gift card courtesy of the Philip and Mary Kathryn Trutter Museum.
The city-wide exhibit at the Springfield Art Association (Nov. 3-20) will showcase first place award-winning artwork from all participating businesses, agencies and institutions. At the previous OMOT in 2019, three LLCC employees had four pieces of art move on to the city-wide exhibit!

LLCC English Studies Club
LLCC has an English Studies Club for those interested in books, film, creative writing, journalism, fan fiction, theater and performance, culture and media discussions and meeting new people. The English Studies Club is a student-run club, and in the past, club members have pursued a variety of activities, such as monthly book discussions, film screenings, creative writing groups for sharing and discussion, visits to sites of literary interest, attendance at local and regional cultural events, volunteering at local schools, essay discussions on topics of interest or just hanging out and having fun. Members have organized and helped with campus events as well, such as literary themed Halloween exhibits and activities, poetry slams or other live readings, panel discussions on selected themes, exhibits for African-American History Month and Women’s History Month, the Banned Book Celebration, the LLCC Lit Fest and anything else of interest to members and the community.
The first two meetings of the year will be held Monday, Sept. 13, 2 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 16, 1 p.m. in Menard 1174. At these meetings, possible directions of the club for this year and leadership opportunities will be discussed. The club will also have a table at Club Information Day on Wednesday, Sept. 22 in A. Lincoln Commons.
For those that can’t come to campus but still want to participate, there will be virtual club membership opportunities to connect with other members and establish online activities and events. Students can contact cara.swafford@llcc.edu to become a virtual member.

Vaccination clinic Sept. 13 & 14
As a reminder, we will be hosting another vaccination clinic in A. Lincoln Commons on the Springfield campus on the following dates and times:
- Monday, Sept. 13, 8:30 a.m.-noon and 4-6:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, Sept. 14, 8:30 a.m.-noon
If you received your first vaccination dose at the clinics held on Aug. 23 or 24, these clinics are being held so you can get your second dose and be fully vaccinated. In addition, this clinic is open to anyone (employee or student) still wanting to begin their vaccination process and get their first dose. The clinic will have both the Pfizer (two-dose regimen) and the Johnson & Johnson (only one dose required) available.
Duplication work orders
LLCC Duplication is experiencing supply issues on black toner. Critical jobs will be processed, but others may be pushed back if at all possible. Please work with Neci and Matt on timing of any jobs that are sent to duplication. We are hoping to receive the additional supplies within a week.
Bistro To Go to open Sept. 14
Bistro Verde, LLCC’s student-run café, will be open during the fall 2021 semester as Bistro To Go. It will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Sept. 14-Nov. 18 (except for Nov. 2). You are invited to enjoy takeout soups, salads, sandwiches, baked goods, coffees and drinks prepared by LLCC culinary arts, baking and pastry, and hospitality students.

Leslie Ross, faculty librarian/professor, was interviewed by WICS Sept. 9 regarding the new poster exhibition in the library, “September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World.” The exhibition was developed by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and also features related original graphic artwork by LLCC students.

Adam Watkins, dean, arts and communication, and Candace Silas, director, Open Door – Workforce Equity Initiative, are participating in Leadership Springfield, sponsored by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Leadership Springfield is a 14-week series of half-day programs, beginning in September, during which participants gain leadership skills and in-depth exposure to critical issues affecting the Springfield area. Participants interact with community leaders and decision makers who share diverse perspectives on significant accomplishments and opportunities within the Springfield community.
