Twelve LLCC students, led by Chris McDonald, Ph.D., professor of political science, participated in the 60th annual Midwest Model United Nations in St. Louis Feb. 19-22. LLCC represented the Republics of Madagascar and Togo.

“In preparation for the conference the students conducted in-depth research into the countries they were representing in addition to detailed analysis of the topics they were assigned,” said Dr. McDonald. “These topics are drawn from the actual UN agenda and are issues with which the global community is currently dealing.”

The experience is intense and students are fully immersed in their role for the duration of the conference. Many former students report Model UN was an important and formative part of the college education and served them in good stead for future “real world” situations during their subsequent careers.

Midwest Model United Nations is a collegiate organization dedicated to offering delegates a unique and challenging experience through a simulation of the United Nations. The conference allows students to gain a practical understanding of pressing international issues from a perspective outside of the classroom, and thus broaden their awareness of international politics. Model UN at LLCC has a long and distinguished history of engaging students in active learning and applied problem solving, this conference being the 17th one McDonald has led.
