Funeral arrangements announced for Dr. Robert Poorman, LLCC founding president

Funeral arrangements for Dr. Robert Poorman, President Emeritus of LLCC, have been announced. Visitation will be Monday, April 10 from 4-7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 S. Fifth St., Springfield. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, April 11, 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield. Following a luncheon in the church hall, burial will be at 1 p.m. in Calvary Cemetery, 2000 N. First St., Springfield.

Memorials are suggested to the LLCC Foundation.

Dr. Poorman, LLCC’s founding president, passed away Sunday, April 2. Read the obituary. Read about Dr. Poorman’s legacy at LLCC.

Flags at LLCC are flying at half-staff in honor of Dr. Poorman through April 11.

Congratulations Kyla Kruse

Kyla Kruse sitting on a stage with the letters NCMPR behind her and a logo with palm treesKyla Kruse, director of communications, graduated from the Leadership Institute of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) on March 29. The Leadership Institute is a 10-month intensive program for community college communications professionals and culminates with a presentation on leadership by each participant at the NCMPR national conference.

Kyla was also recognized during the conference as the NCMPR District 3 Communicator of the Year.

LLCC sponsors job fair

LLCC was the presenting sponsor of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Job Fair March 29. Participating were Mac Warren (coordinator), assistant director, recruitment and response; Jeff Martin, workforce recruitment and placement coordinator; Chris Edmonds, program director, construction occupations; Jan Szoke, program director, respiratory therapy; Diane Wilson, program director, neurodiagnostic technology; and Josh Collins, assistant vice president, business relations.

Please remind students to fill out media survey; deadline extended to April 1

Several emails have been sent to all LLCC  students asking them to fill out a survey regarding their media preferences. As incentives, gift cards are being awarded in random drawings to two students who fill out the survey.  The survey deadline has been extended to Saturday, April 1. Public Relations and Marketing (PRM)  is working with Interact Communications to administer this nationwide survey of community college students, with the goal of better communication with students. Youth Leadership Institute students visit LLCC

On Friday, March 24, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Nu Omicron Omega Chapter in Springfield partnered with LLCC to hold a career exploration day for its leadership program targeting middle school youth called Youth Leadership Institute (YLI).  It is part of a national initiative focused on giving middle school kids opportunities to cultivate leadership skills.

The program entails multiple modules in areas such as goal setting, civic and social awareness, life skills, career exploration and community service. On Friday, four YLI participants representing Iles, Franklin and Hazel Dell Middle Schools took part in a tour of four career areas — surgical tech, occupational therapy assistant, art/graphic design and biology.

Michelle Pulce-Flynn, director of grant development, is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and serves on the YLI committee. She reached out to Kim Wilson, recruitment specialist, who coordinated a tour for the YLI students.

PRM conducting student media preferences survey

LLCC Public Relations and Marketing (PRM) is again conducting a survey of students regarding their media preferences. Emails have been sent to all students with a link and QR code leading to the survey. PRM is working with Interact Communications to administer this nationwide survey of community college students, with the goal of better communication with students. The survey runs through March 24, and two random drawings will be held to award gift cards to participants. Any questions may be directed to Lynn Whalen, chief communications officer, at lynn.whalen@llcc.edu.
