Update on Writing Center services

The LLCC Writing Center will be offering Zoom live chat tutoring sessions for writing assignments beginning Monday, April 6. Students must contact the center so that staff may schedule Zoom chats ahead of time. Appointments can be made by calling the Writing Center at 217-786-2341. Zoom appointments are offered Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. These sessions will be scheduled for 45 minutes each.

Additionally, the Writing Center will continue to offer help via email if a student is more comfortable with that format or is unable to use Zoom. Email assistance is offered during all of our operating hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Email requests will be treated on a first come/first served basis (similar to a walk-ins). If students submit an essay for review outside of our normal hours, the Writing Center will respond the next day in the order that emails are received.

Students should include course information and assignment instructions when requesting assistance.

CAS members present at the NCLCA annual conference

Julie Clevenger, executive director, Center for Academic Success, and Jamie McCoy, student academic support programs coordinator, were invited to present a session titled “Academic Recovery Programs for At-Risk Students” at the National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA) annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky on Oct. 6. The session introduced participants to the Academic Recovery Plan (ARP) which the LLCC Center for Academic Success developed as a way to address the academic and life obstacles that many students face when trying to return to school. The session also provided a history of the development of the ARP program, the various departments involved, a walk-through of how the program works, including documentation and skill enhancement areas, and an examination of our institution’s longitudinal data. The NCLCA annual conference is attended by learning center directors and tutoring coordinators from both two- and four-year institutions located all around the world.
