Fresa y chocolate” (1994) This film explores the unlikely friendship that develops between two Cuban men who have very different attitudes toward the Revolution. In addition, the Trutter Museum will be open, with culturally relevant artifacts from the Trutter collection on display in the reception area. Card Shower for Sue Hamilton

The Arts and Humanities Department would like to remind you that if you would like to wish Sue Hamilton, adjunct music instructor, well in her retirement, they are collecting cards for a “Card Shower” now through this Friday, Sept. 2. Sue has taught class piano, choir with additional private applied vocal lessons since 1979.

Murray Gallery opens with humorous new exhibit “Otto Cricket Hits!”; artist reception Sept. 8

The James S. Murray Gallery is now open for the fall semester, featuring the work of local educator, graphic designer and artist Brytton Bjorngaard.Bjorngaard exhibit

Otto Cricket Hits!” takes a humorous look at the effect of “autocorrect” on communication. The exhibit will be open to the public on the second floor of Menard Hall through Sept.15. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, Sept. 8 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. The gallery’s regular hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays.

As something intended to perfect and thus improve interactions with each other, autocorrect often has quite the opposite effect. Bjorngaard’s medium is photographic collage, an appropriate choice for someone who is still very active as a commercial designer and also a nod to Dada, the art movement that not only popularized collage but also dealt heavily in sardonic humor.

Bjorngaard, who teaches at the University of Illinois Springfield, has long been interested in personal interaction and subsequent experience with design. As a master of fine arts candidate at Iowa State University, she studied the effects of environmental design in healthcare.

Wish Sue Hamilton well in her retirement!

Congratulations to Sue Hamilton, adjunct music instructor, on her retirement. Sue has taught class piano, choir with additional private applied vocal lessons since 1979. With this in mind, the Arts and Humanities office will be hosting a card shower for Sue Hamilton. The Arts and Humanities Department will collect cards until September 2.

Murray Gallery installation closes Thursday

Stop by the James. S. Murray Gallery  to view an installation by artist Jeff Miller called “The Worker Line.”  It’s only open through the end of this week, July 28.

The Worker Line art installationThis is one of few installations over the years in the gallery space, and is designed to envelop the viewer into an environment. About this piece, Miller says, “The struggle of ambition against the realities of faceless labor has been a driving force in my art. This body of work draws from labor-based jobs that exist within a hog slaughtering plant located in my hometown. ‘The Worker Line’ consists of a single, life-size woodcut block that provides a layered, printmaking-based installation project. The piece touches on the consequences of giving into failure and lack of identity within factory settings. The juxtaposition of these topics combined with a mixed-media approach provides an alternative method with which to approach issues concerning working class struggle.” Continue reading
