Marie Watson, student engagement coordinator, along with students Brandon Lewis, Terrelle Jackson and Saleana Moore, were interviewed for a State Journal-Register story on the Zombie Run April 22, with proceeds to the Student Life Office food pantry. Saleana was also interviewed by WCIA Channel 3 news.

For the first run ever hosted by the Student Government Association and despite the cold weather (40 degrees), there were about 25-30 people participating in the event (runners, zombies and volunteers).

The run raised $160 for the food pantry along with a number of canned food donations.

 

 

 

Congratulations to new Beta Nu Nursing Honor Society members!

Congratulations to the newest members of the Beta Nu Nursing Honor Society! The induction ceremony was held April 13. To be eligible students need to have a overall 3.0 GPA, have earned a grade of “A” or “B” in all of their nursing courses, and complete a community service project. The co- advisors are Professors Mary Goldstein and Dr. Pamela Bradley.

Moving Network Folder Items to OneDrive – open lab this morning

The college is converting what is now stored on the network drives to OneDrive. If you store documents on a network drive, you will need to be prepared to move those documents into your OneDrive account before the end of the spring semester. Attend this open lab and get one-on-one assistance with moving your network files to OneDrive.

50th anniversary event: History Symposium this Thursday through Saturday

LLCC is co-sponsoring the Illinois State Historical Society Symposium this Thursday through Saturday, April 20-22, in the Trutter Center. The symposium is titled “1917, Year of Turmoil: War and Suffrage” and is observing the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entering WWI. LLCC students and faculty are encouraged to attend any of the lectures free without registering by presenting their LLCC ID to the staff manning the welcome desk.

Professors Chris McDonald, Ph.D. and Mark Roehrs, Ph.D. are presenting at the symposium.

Eileen Tepatti, Ed.D., vice president of academic services, will provide welcoming remarks at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Dr. McDonald speaks Thursday at a presentation from 1-2:30 p.m.: “Ambulance Corps and WW1,” Debra M. Dudek, Adult and Teen Services, Manager, Fountaindale Public Library, Bolingbrook, IL;  “Kent Hagler, Volunteer American Ambulance Driver in France,” Chris McDonald, Ph.D., LLCC.

Drs. McDonald and Roehrs speak Friday from 2:45-4 p.m. on the topic: “Root of the Prairie Division: From Illinois National Guard to the 33rd Division, August 1917-May 1918,” Mark Roehrs, Ph.D., LLCC. “33rd Into Action: Training with the British and First Combats, May-Sept. 1918,” Chris McDonald, Ph.D. Katie McAfee, associate professor of accounting, will moderate.

Friday evening, from 6-9 p.m., the symposium moves to the Illinois State Military Museum. Dr. McDonald presents: Magic Lanterns in the Great Ar,” media presentation, along with The 8th Illinois: First in Battle, First in Valor,” by Mark DePue, Ph.D.

Our sympathy to John Paul Jaramillo and Justin Knoedler

We extend our sincere sympathy to John Paul Jaramillo, professor of English, and Justin Knoedler, assistant baseball coach, on the recent passing of their fathers.

John Relles Jaramillo, father of John Paul Jaramillo, passed away on Saturday, April 15. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Our Lady of the Meadows Church, Pueblo, Colorado. Inurnment: Imperial Memorial Gardens. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a 30-year kidney transplant survivor.

John B. Knoedler, 61, of Springfield, father of Justin Knoedler, died Sunday, April 16, at St. John’s Hospital. Visitation: 4-7 pm, Wednesday, April 19, at St. Agnes Church. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, April 20, at St. Agnes Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Springfield Southwest Baseball Association or the Prairie Heart Foundation.

 

 

Poodles visit nursing department!

Valerie Wright, associate of dean of nursing, spent some time with Morgan, the therapy poodle yesterday morning. The therapy poodles stopped by to visit the nursing students and will be back on April 27, 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. and May 8, 10 a.m.-noon. All are invited to visit these friendly dogs!

 

Student Government Association sponsors Zombie Run this Saturday

 The LLCC Student Government Association will sponsor a 1K Zombie Run this Saturday, April 22, beginning at 9 a.m. in front of the LLCC softball field behind Cass Gym.

The public is invited to participate in this zombie-themed, fun event. Pre-registration is available at https://sgazombierun.eventbrite.com or participants may register on site beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The first 30 registrants receive a free T-shirt, and prizes will be awarded. Cost to participate is $10 or a minimum of five ready-to-eat items to be donated to the LLCC Student Life Office Food Pantry to assist students in need of a meal during their time on campus. Suggested ready-to-eat items include trail mix, to-go peanut butter cups, serving size cereal, mac and cheese cups, ready-to-eat tuna or chicken salad kits, easy-open cans of soup, ready-to-eat pasta or rice meals, protein or granola bars, crackers, bottled water and juice boxes. All donations should be in original packaging listing the use by, sell by, or best if used by date.

Any items not utilized by students will be donated to the Central Illinois Food Bank. Questions may be directed to Marie Watson, student engagement coordinator.

SAVE Taskforce: Thank you, congratulations, opportunities

The SAVE Taskforce would like to thank everyone who participated in the Sexual Assault Awareness Day of Action. The Day of Action brought sexual assault awareness and resources to the LLCC community, while also giving hope to sexual assault survivors that they are not in this alone.

Congratulations to Michael Phelon, Open Door coordinator, winner of the faculty/staff runway competition and Bobby Herpel, winner of the student runway competition. Michael and Bobby both received a trophy made by Leslie Stalter, professor of art.

Thursday, April 20 – Computer Science Academy and the Gay-Straight Alliance clubs are sponsoring a Jeans Day. Interested participants can drop off their $5 to Student Life.

 Saturday, April 22 – Chemistry Club, Brady Gentry, chief of police and Michael Phelon, Open Door coordinator will be participating in Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault (PCASA) Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. All faculty, staff, and students can walk in the event to raise awareness and funds for Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault. Friday, April 28 – UIS Take Back the Night- all faculty, staff, and students can meet in the Commons at 7 p.m. to walk over to the UIS event together.

Earlier, they were interviewed by WCIA News and the State Journal-Register.
