LLCC at Central Illinois STEM Fair
LLCC Mathematics and Computer Science, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and Workforce Institute represented the college at the seventh annual Central Illinois STEM Fair in Rochester on April 10. LLCC promoted STEM education using robots, chemistry experiments, flying drones, microscope demonstrations, live Venus fly traps, geology trivia, interactive GIS displays and many other activities.
Special thanks to the faculty and staff who participated, including Dean Butzow, Jennifer Davis, Jeff Martin, David Pietrzak, Jennifer Ram, Sam Reif, Scott Searcy, Rich Teeter, Brent Todd, Lisa Volk-Draper and Rosie the Snake. Many students also participated, including Farren Ackerman, Isaac Barrett, Angelea Cooke, Liam Green, Shawn McCarthy, Aaron Robertson, Alex Sidener and Preston Siewert.
Get ready for AI summer camp
As you plan your summer activities, LLCC Academic Innovation and eLearning invites you to participate in the Online AI Summer Camp designed for LLCC faculty and staff. The Online AI Summer Camp is a self-paced, asynchronous opportunity to enhance your AI skills and knowledge over the summer break.
Whether you’re new to AI, a seasoned AI explorer or just looking to learn “s’more” about AI this summer, this summer camp is for you. Your virtual camp counselors, John Freml and Becky Parton, have curated a collection of resources including webinars, readings and other material designed to support your professional growth and exploration in AI.
The AI Summer Camp will guide you through the emerging trends, best practices and ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in learning environments. Designed for self-paced discovery, this collection includes short tutorials and programing from familiar providers such as Monday Morning Mentor and NISOD, as well as a collection of interviews and webinars featuring leading voices in the field of education and artificial intelligence. You will also find articles and whitepapers that explore the crossroads of AI and pedagogy.
For those seeking even more adventure, we are offering the course “Teaching With Artificial Intelligence” hosted by Auburn University. This self-paced course weaves expertise from a diverse range of faculty to provide a meaningful learning experience that is focused on supporting educators in thinking through the urgent questions that the AI disruption of higher education presents. The course also offers opportunities to learn from and with your LLCC colleagues and will be guided by your virtual camp counselors. Those who complete the course will receive their Auburn University AI Explorer Badge. Registration is required to participate in “Teaching With Artificial Intelligence.” Virtual tents are limited so please register for “Teaching With Artificial Intelligence” soon. Journaling and Mindfulness Today
As a reminder, today’s journaling and mindfulness session will be held in Menard Hall, Room 1177 beginning at noon. Journals and ink pens will be available, a giveaway will be awarded to a lucky winner and attendants can enjoy items from the Wellness Wagon. We hope to see you there!
2024 Distinguished Service Award nominations due Friday
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes more than the “employee of the year.” This award is given to LLCC employees who demonstrate exemplary leadership and service to the college community, promote a student-focused environment and exhibit a strong commitment to the college’s core values. Service is a matter of the job. Leadership can be provided in subtle ways. This award recognizes those who provide service and leadership beyond the minimum. Nominations should clearly describe what qualities exhibited by the nominee through his/her performance, attitude, behavior and action puts them in the elite class of “Distinguished Service Award Recipient.”
Recipients of the Distinguished Service Award will be selected from the nomination pool. If no one is nominated in a particular category, no award will be given. The Committee does not widen the pool beyond those nominations received, so your nomination is important! The selection committee is comprised of past recipients of the award and other members of the college community. All employment classifications are represented.
To make a nomination, please submit the nomination form along with an essay about the nominee. The essay can be as long or short as you want it to be so long as concrete examples are provided of the areas identified in the nomination form. The information provided in the essay will be the basis of the evaluation for the selection committee.
